Mart Stam - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stam actually contributed a house to the 1927 Weissenhof Siedlung, the permanent housing project developed and presented by the exhibition "Die Wohnung" ("The Dwelling"), organized by the Deutscher Werkbund in Stuttgart.
Stam was there in February 1931 to participate in the struggle to build rational worker housing from the ground up, an effort ultimately defeated by adverse weather, corruption, and poor design decisions.
Stam moved to planning activities in Makeyevka in Ukraine in 1932, then to Orsk, with his friend Hans Schmidt (again) and with Bauhaus student and future wife Lotte Beese, then to the copper-mining Soviet city of Balgash.

Mart Stam, designer of this chair, was a famous Dutch architect and furniture designer.

Though similar to his colleagues, Mart Stam was awarded the authorship of the cantilever chair design by the German court.

In the spring of 1926, when Stam was still working for the architectural firm of Brinkman and Van der Vlugt, he and his colleagues C.J. Engelen, A. van der Linden, K. Vlekke and A.J.M. Buijs created a chair made of gas pipes and plumber joints.
Stam made a drawing of this model on the back of one of Willi Baumeister’s wedding cards and showed it to Mies van der Rohe over a friendly dinner in Hotel Marquart in Stuttgart on November 22, 1926.
It was in particular Stam’s later role as director of the former School of Applied Art (nowadays the Gerrit Rietveld Academy) that contributed to this design philosophy gaining a strong foothold in Dutch design education.

In 1932, Stam was awarded in the German courts the artistic copyright for his designs, certified as the "embodiment of modern realism with the most simple means in the most reduced form".
Late 1924, Mart Stam, presumably unaware of the chair of Stuttgen, also conceived the idea of the cantilever.
Not being a metal expert, Stam’s first chair was a rigid cast iron tube with plumber joints at the bends.

This chair is a simplification of the Mart Stam and Breuer cantilever arm chairs of 1929 (Standard-Mobel, Thonet Model B34).
Since the continuous tube which forms both the base and the arms also serves to keep the back vertical apart, the "handlebar" back cross piece of the earlier model is eliminated.
At present, it is one of the most widely sold and copied modern chairs.
