Toonder was arguably the greatest European cartoonist ever - his Heer Bommel series ran in newspapers across the continent for nearly 45 years, and were re-run in some Swedish and Dutch newspapers well into the 1990s - more than a decade after Toonder retired.
Toonder stuck to the traditional format of a two-tier strip in which the top row consisted of panels without dialogue, and the bottom row contained prose captions, in a flowery, witty style.

Toonder has received a great many awards and honorary distinctions for both his illustrating skills and the quality of his literary output.
Toonder's wife Phiny Dick (herself the author of various childrens' books) wrote the captions for its initial six publications, but then left it up to her husband to provide both texts and illustrations.
In addition to 'Tom Poes', Toonder began the gag strip 'De Goeroe' in De Telegraaf in the 1970s, together with his son Eiso and the Irishman Peter Hoye, using the joint signature of Peter Abel.

Bommel in Dutch language) is a fictional anthropomorphic bear and one of the two main characters, the other being Tom Puss (Tom Poes in Dutch), of an originally Dutch series of comic books bearing the name of either one main characters in their name, written by Marten Toonder.
Toonder created various short animated movies as commercials for Philips in the 1940s starring Puss and Bumble.

Well, his works show such refined usage of the Dutch language that even translating it into German, which is quite possibly the most related language on earth (or perhaps South-African is, but that lacks the complexity of the language and is basically Dutch with English simple spelling rules), would be an incredibly hard job.

Marten Toonder died, at the age of 97 in his sleep.
For those who do not know Marten Toonder, which was the creator of the famous character Ollie B. Bommel, might recognise it's picture instead.
One of the things I will always remember of his creations is his cartoon with the title "als je begrijpt wat ik bedoel" (If you know what I mean).

I have been lucky enough to have visited the Toonder studios where a lot of the comics were produced.
I made up a story of working for the school paper, and I was led to a table with these cigarsmoking bigwigs (Dickerdack-style -on of Toonder's charachter was the Mayor of the town, a big cigarsmoking Hippo) and they laughed and decided that it was cool.

Bumble and Tom Puss, was made in May 1999 in eastern Ireland, in Greystones where Toonder lives.
I've tried to use the mysticism that characterizes Toonder's drawings as a source of inspiration for this series.
A number of portraits was made on Toonder's estate 'Eyrefield Lodge' where I portrayed him 'au naturel' in his surroundings (sitting on a bench in his garden, as 'gentleman of prominence' in his armchair by the fireplace).

The Toonder Studios produced a great number of newspaper strips, which dominated the newspapers right after the war, and well into the 1960s.
The Toonder Studios put out Tom Poes Weekblad, and Wim Meuldijk devoted Ketelbinkiekrant and Sneeuwvlok to his popular creations.
Luckily, there were still comics that were considered "healthy" and that continued in the newspapers, most notably all the comic strips produced by the famous Martin Toonder Studios.
