Martha and the Muffins, best known for the New Wave hit "Echo Beach" in 1980, continued to produce some of the most interesting music of the 80's, but listening to this CD, you will have to put aside some preconceptions of "80's music".

Martha and the Muffins were originally clever amateurs who had fun fooling around with music in Toronto.
Vocalist Martha Johnson has a sometimes awkward but always personable style of singing on "Echo Beach," "Indecision" and "Paint by Number Heart"; it's as if she walked into a studio to tell what happened to her that day rather than to perform.
Martha and the Muffins sound as if they're having less fun than before; second vocalist Martha Ladly (composer of "Was Ezo") left the group after this LP.

Martha and the Muffins, This Is The Ice Age (Dindisc/Virgin) 81
When the reissue of Martha & The Muffins’ first album, Metro Music was announced, I only had the vaguest recollections of them as some sort of new wave one hit wonder on the order of Berlin or Yaz.
Showcasing Martha Johnson’s vocals, “Women Around the World At Work” is a stunning single, with a metronomic rhythm that anticipates Stereolab, a searing guitar solo that echoes the dry, brittle tone of Television’s Tom Verlaine, and Andy Haas’ melancholy saxophone solo that’s too atonal to have that cliché’d 80s sound.

Perfect Sound Forever: Martha and the Muffins interview
Martha and the Muffins emerged in 1980, just as punk was morphing into more palatable "new wave" and a new egalitarian sense of who could play music was emerging (at least in the underground).
But since Martha and the Muffins dealt with realism, not romantic fantasy, they were outcasts even among the 1980s pop outcasts.
Martha Johnson: I wasn't going to be the singer at first, I was just going to play my AceTone organ which I had recently purchased and didn't really know how to play.

The roots of this Canadian new wave band lie in the mid-70s, when Martha Johnson was the organist with Oh Those Pants, a 10-piece 60s covers/send-up band that also included future members of the Cads.
They were joined by Martha Ladly, who initially played guitar but later moved to keyboards and trombone.
This resulted in Martha And The Muffins becoming denigrated as "one-hit-wonders", when in actuality all their albums, particularly Trance And Dance, are deeply resonant collections of songwriting which endure as well as any "pop new wave" of the period.

BBC - Classic Rock/Pop Review - Martha And The Muffins, Metro Music
Fronted by keyboardist/singer/trombonist Martha Johnson and guitarist Mark Gane, M+M (as they were later to become) spun dispassionate, witty tales of boredom, longing and paranoia in a manner not dissimilar to that of Talking Heads.
However, they had a pure pop sensibilty that put them in a slightly different bracket from the hordes of Art school rockers doing the rounds at the time, coupled with an unwillingness to let themselves be taken too seriously (that disappeared later when they hooked up with producer Daniel Lanois).
Most of all, the Muffins had good tunes; "Paint by Number Heart" and "Indecision" are viral in their catchiness.
