Martham Broad is a National Nature Reserve maintained by English Nature on the River Thurne in the county of Norfolk, England, within The Broads National Park.
It is part of the Upper Thurne Broads and Marshes SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest), and it is owned and managed by Norfolk Wildlife Trust.
Boats can only use a narrow marked channel; they are discouraged from using the broad during the winter months because of the breeding season.

There are two routes across the broad; the first heads in a straight line to the north west where Catfield Dyke heads off in a north westerly direction for ¾ of a mile to Catfield Common (TG399217).
The broad is actually split into two smaller broads, one on the north side of the river and the other on the south side.
Although the broad is, in effect, the head of the River Thurne, the navigable route travels straight across the middle from west to east and continues for another ½ mile along a dyke which leads to West Somerton (TG459214).

Hickling Broad is one of the largest expanses of open water in East Anglia.
The broad is thought to have been formed by peat and clay digging and is only 1.5m deep.
Martham is close to Route 30 (Norfolk Coast Cycle Way) of the Sustrans National Cycle Network, and a major trail, the Weavers Way, skirts the southern shore of the broad.

The Broads has been a popular destination for boating holidays since the Victorians 'discovered' the pleasures of sailing its waterways in the late 19th century.
Motor cruisers and yachts from 2-12 berth can be hired from boat yards throughout the Broads and are available weekly, as well as for short breaks and longer periods.
Motor launches are available by the hour from boat yards in all major villages in the Broads; some have electric boats that are quieter and better for the environment.

This is the second largest of all the Broads, and was heavily polluted in the past.
A revitalised broad, once almost completely silted up but now restored by the Broads Authority to the condition it was in a century ago.
The Broad lies on land owned by the Norfolk Naturalists Trust and visitors are able to explore the area on foot, via specially built walkways and view from an observation hide.

Lots of rivers and broads converge on this spot and I suppose this was why the monks chose this bit of high ground to build their Abbey.
The outer broad has a boatyard and is a good place to moor for the night, perhaps swinging round your mudweight.
This village has two broads as well, Ranworth Broad (a nature reserve closed to boats) and Malthouse Broad which is where all the boats gather.

It is dangerous to swim near moorings, where boats are coming and going and where the river banks are steep.
These are the best places to visit, as it is very likely that local windsurfers will be around who would only be too pleased to give help or advice on conditions such as tides, currents and the best wind directions.

 Fishing the Broads 1950-1960
Other notable captures include rudd to 3lb 4oz, this was part of a catch of 10 fish which totalled 23 lb loz taken from Martham Broad, roach 2lb 4oz and a wild brown trout of 6lb 14oz taken on a spinner from Lyng mill pool.
It was unheard of to catch a bream in the Broads waters over about 5 lbs, there were huge shoals of 2 pounders, 3 pounders and 4 pounders but very few over that weight.
I remember one particular fish and that was just inside the entrance to the South Broad at Martham, and I believe that fish is on this film I mentioned and that was a 21 or 22 pounder.

27 feet in length, and the oldest yacht on hire on the broads..
During the Sunday we went up to have a look at Martham Broad, then Hickling, before returning to Martham to return for the night.
On our return to Martham Broad that evening we were to learn yet more of the art of Broads Sailing (and there clearly is an art to it!) as we ran aground on almost every tack as we left the Hickling Broad.

Two adults, one of which was ringed, joined the roving flocks of Pinkfeet in north Norfolk, one of them also appeared in the east of the county in January, at Martham, Breydon Water and near Reedham, and in February at Halvergate.
Reports of 1-2 wintering birds (all inland) at Martham Broad, Cantley BF, Strumpshaw, Sparham, Dickleburgh, Langmere, Lynford GP and Nunnery Lakes.

Two were in Martham Ferry Dyke and one on the main river.
This boat is based in a garden in Chester about 10 miles from the Irish sea, so it is used as a trailer-sailer, towed to different slipways and launching sites.

It's one of those lovely and peaceful, ''typically broadland'' places which overlooks a large reedbed, a broad (sort of a lake), a few trees and marshy fields surrounding.
I don't know if it's due to the close proximity of Hickling Broad and Horsey Mere with their visitors attractions etc but I've hardly ever seen anyone else here, today was no exception.
Martham broad, one of my very favourite spots in Norfolk.

Across the broad, the pancake flat landscape of water and reedbeds broken only by a few trees and the windmills set against a clear blue sky made for a lovely backdrop.
Several ducks on the broad still, inc. Goldeneye, Tufted Ducks, Wigeon, Teal, Gadwall plus 1 Snipe, an overflying Curlew, a flock of Lapwing and ~20 Cormorant sunning themselves.
The Broads are fantastic at any time but on a fine day at this time of year - unbeatable.

The chalet is situated over a mile upstream of the notoriously small and ancient bridge at Potter Heigham.
Fortunately the bridge prevents the larger hire craft from coming to Martham so the river is much quieter and less commercialised here.
From the chalet the river leads up to Martham and Somerton Broad, besides Kendal Dyke to Heigham Sounds and the finest sailing and fishing in Hickling Broad and Horsey Broad.
