Martinus Theunis Steyn - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Martinus (or Marthinus) Theunis Steyn (October 2, 1857 - 1916) was a South African politician, last president of the Orange Free State.
In 1895, upon the resignation of President FW Reitz, Steyn was the candidate of the pan-Dutch party for the vacant post.
While OFS was under British occupation, Steyn ran a government in hiding, playing a key role in continuing Boer resistance and the guerrilla warfare that made up most of the Boer War.

M.T. Steyn (Marthinus Theunis) was born in Rietfontein, Winburg on the 2nd of October, 1857 and died in Bloemfontein on the 28th of November, 1916
Steyn was deeply disappointed in the cowardly manner in which Bloemfontein was “defended” and also in the enthusiastic manner in which the townsfolk welcomed the British Army.
Steyn was to serve as one of the Free State delegates at the National convention at Durban in October/November 1908, where he, on recommendation of John X Merriman was elected vice-chairman.

Indeed, there were several cases, including some that will be explored below, where legal practitioners had been either partially, or wholly, exposed to a legal education in both traditions.
Having embarked on a legal training in Holland, Steyn, who despite his republican upbringing was anything but an anglophobe, soon discovered that his Dutch was not up to the task and moved to England where he eventually qualified at the Inner Temple.
While many of the roots of these processes are to be found in the postwar reconstruction period and ideas proclaimed by English speakers, some may also be traced back to certain Afrikaans-speaking notables in antebellum society.
