Martial art - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Martial arts, often referred to as fighting systems, are systems of codified practices and traditions of training for combat, usually without the use of guns and other modern weapons.
European martial arts have mostly adapted to changing technology and are truer to the English meaning of that phrase, so that while their descendants still exist, martial arts are focused on things like flying helicopters and infantry tactics for riflemen.
Because different martial arts often have differing goals, it is difficult to evaluate the effectiveness of various martial arts based on one general standard or method; it is arguably impossible to directly compare the arts with fundamentally different domains of practice, such as Kendo against Tae Kwon Do.

Catholic Answers Forums - Any Catholic Martial Artists?
All these martial arts have taught me the value of life and the importance of preserving it, even if it is the life of your own aggressor.
One example would be if you ever saw someone hold the tip of a long spear and press it to their neck and then someone else would whack the other end of it with something like a hammer hitting a nail into a piece of wood, but the spear doesn't puncture his neck.
There are several exemplary martial artists who don't believe in it and don't use it, so I don't see how it could benefit you in that sense.

 Requirements for Martial Artists
The martial arts will become a mirror which you hold up to yourself— a mirror like a finely polished blade, which is used to cut away the imperfections of one’s own self.
Without these traits, people pretend to be martial artists, but in reality are only criminals that cause problems to society; or sportsmen who will die because they do not understand real combat; or artsy esoterics, who also do not understand true combat because they are not honest with themselves, and are nothing but toothless tigers.
In a similar way, a student of the martial arts learns to detect the attack as it is being delivered, and to respond and adapt accordingly.

Kettlebells For Martial Artists - by Steve Cotter, Senior RKC
Of all the physical variables that the well-rounded martial artist must address when designing the right strength training program, there are 4 in particular that kettlebells address better than other training modes: strength/endurance, mental toughness/body hardening, martial specificity, and efficiency (economy of motion).
For the martial artist, the strength that is developed through supplementary weight training must be able to transfer into improved striking, kicking, grappling, trapping, and throwing skills.
In other words, to be efficient with his use of time, the martial artist should spend at least 70% of the total practice time on the martial art skill training and not on lifting weights.

The Martialist: The Magazine For Those Who Fight Unfairly
Martial arts instructors who promote such attitudes of total aggression were called "naïve." Those who agree with such a philosophy were presumed to suffer from low self-esteem, a lack of confidence, or the inability to exercise judgment in the face of an assault.
What martial artist in his or her right mind would claim that it is "great" to be attacked, because when an attack occurs one is in "total control" of the situation?
Any martial artist who thinks he or she will have the time and information necessary to assess the intentions of an attacker who has just come from behind to smash a beer bottle over his or her head has no idea just how quickly real attacks occur.
