Switzerland (Confederation de Helvetica) is snuggled in between France, Italy, Austria, and Germany in the center of Western Europe.
The area that Switzerland encompasses is located atop rugged mountains (the Alps, among others) which were twisted, bent, and then forced up via plate tectonics over 500,000,000 years ago.
Though I am sure the people in the land that would become Switzerland appreciated the magnificent beauty of the Alps, it was not until the romantic period until the masses realized started the magnitude and the tranquility of the region.

Valais Travel Guide | Fodor's Online
This is the valley (valais) of the mighty Rhône, a river born in the heights above Gletsch (Glacier), channeled into a broad westward stream between the Bernese and the Valais Alps, lost in the depths of Lac Léman (Lake Geneva), and then diverted into France, where it ultimately dissolves in the marshes of the Camargue.
Its broad upper valley forms a region of Switzerland that is still wild, remote, beautiful, and slightly unruly, its mazots (barns balanced on stone columns to keep mice out of winter food stores) romantically tumbledown, its highest slopes peopled by nimble farmers who live at vertiginous angles.
The birthplace of Christianity in Switzerland, Valais was never reformed by Calvin or Zwingli, nor conquered by the ubiquitous Bernese -- one reason, perhaps, that the west end of Valais seems the most intensely French of the regions of the Suisse Romande.

The Rhône, having flowed almost arrow straight along its valley for over 100km, suddenly makes a sharp right-angled turn at Martigny, heading off between the mountains to Lake Geneva; elevated points within the town give yawning views along both valleys, east and north.
And yet Martigny is a curiously unsatisfying place to spend more than an afternoon.
Stay overnight and make the best of it, or cut your losses and look elsewhere: St-Maurice has held onto its history better than Martigny; atmospheric Sion is close by; or you might prefer to plump for a “been-there-seen-it” night way up on the Grand-St-Bernard.
