  Encyclopedia: Martin Aircraft
Martin started out building military trainers in Santa Ana, California, and then in 1916, accepted a merger offer from the Wright Company, creating the Wright-Martin Aircraft Company in September.
Martin's first big success came with the MB-1 bomber, a large biplane design ordered by the US Army on January 17, 1918.
Martin merged with the American-Marietta Corporation in 1961 to form the Martin Marietta Corporation, which subsequently merged with the Lockheed Corporation in 1995 to form Lockheed Martin.

 MARTIN BAKER AIRCRAFT
The gun continued to extend until the intermediate tube was arrested by a flange on the outer tube, the shock being cushioned by fifteen hollow gas-filled rings.
The adoption of this system in Hunter, Javelin and other aircraft meant that one second after the pilot initiated the ejection procedure be would be carried clear of the aircraft, no time being wasted on any other pre-ejection action which may have prejudiced his chances of escape.
With the advent of a new type of aircraft known as the “light fighter” it became increasingly important to reduce the weight of the ejection seat.

 Martin 162A
Martin could not afford the time or money to meet the requirement and risked the Navy's disapproval by altering the plans for the 1/4-scale Model 160 and constructing it as a 3/8-scale Model 162.
Martin engineers did not consider the deviations from the 162 plans to be a significant problem because they were more concerned about the hydrodynamic qualities of the 162A's hull than its flight characteristics, which they could evaluate with wind tunnel models.
The most serious problem revealed during testing was a tendency for the aircraft to develop an oscillation in pitch, known as porpoising, while planing on the "step" (the point at which hydrodynamic pressure lifted the hull out of the water).

For instance, in 1932, Martin garnered a contract to build a low-wing, twin-engine monoplane, the B-10, which was faster than the other fighter planes of that era.
By 1959, the market had evolved, and The Martin Co. (as it was known by that point) left the aircraft-building business and began focusing on space travel and missiles used by the military.
Martin Marietta became Lockheed Martin Corp. in 1995, and a spin-off called Middle River Aircraft Systems, a subsidiary of General Electric, was founded in 2001 and operates from the Martin site.

This was to be the Martin Mars, a 140,000-pound behemoth that was the largest plane in the U.S. military inventory until the arrival of the B-36 intercontinental bomber in 1947.
The industrialist Henry J. Kaiser suggested that, given Martin's blueprints for the Mars, he could quickly build hundreds of the planes in his west-coast shipyards.
Martin recognized this and began work on a 145,000-pound landplane using the same engines and wings as the JRM-1; the Model 199 was to have a floor level no higher than that of a truck.

Glenn L. Martin began manufacturing aircraft in the early days of aviation at the beginning of the 20th century and went on to become one of the leading military airplane manufacturers in the United States.
However, aircraft designs were considered public property, and government policy was to solicit competitive bids for its aircraft.
Martin's bid for the MB-2 was higher than other bids, and the Army ended up ordering most of the aircraft from Curtiss, L-W-F Engineering, and Aeromarine using Martin's design.
