During the Battle of Britain Martin’s canopy emergency release device quickly gained him recognition, and in 1944 the RAF Air Staff approached the Martin-Baker Company to develop a system whereby the pilot of a disabled aircraft could be safely ejected for a normal parachute recovery.
The new Martin-Baker Starfighter seat unexpectedly experienced some initial problems, however, and several German Luftwaffe pilots were killed in Starfighter ejections using M-B Mk.DQ-7 seat.
