Martin Balsam (November 4, 1919 – February 13, 1996) was an American actor.
In 1947 he was selected by Elia Kazan and Lee Strasberg to be a player in the Actors' Studio television program and went on to appear in a number of television plays in the 1950s and returned frequently to television as a guest star on numerous dramas.
Their daughter, Talia Balsam, was born January 1, 1960.

Bronx-raised actor Martin Balsam was the oldest of three children of a ladies' sportswear salesman.
Unfortunately for Balsam, the Oscar was as much a curse as a blessing on his career, and soon he was playing little more than variations on his Thousand Clowns role.
In 1991, Balsam appeared in Martin Scorsese's Cape Fear, the remake of a film in which Balsam had co-starred (in an entirely different role) in 1962.

Martin Henry Balsam was born in the Bronx borough of New York City, the son of a ladies' sportswear manufacturer.
Balsam was one of the first to join the Actors Studio, where Lee Strasberg taught "method" acting to a generation of stars including Marlon Brando, Paul Newman and Rod Steiger.

Balsam appeared as a judge in Martin Scorsese's remake of "Cape Fear" (1991) and made his final screen appearance as a detective in "The Silence of the Hams" (1994).
Balsam died from a stroke in Rome, Italy in February 1996.

A game of psychological cat and mouse entails, with the police chief Mark Dutton (Martin Balsam) and private investigator, Charles Siever (Telly Savalas) being called into play as enforcers and blockers in the line of defense that is orchestrated to prevent Cady from advancing his desires and seeing them come to fruition.
The story that develops runs the gamut from law-abiding citizens seeking to remedy the course of events through attrition, to seeing their machinations destroyed through the sly maneuverings of Cady and his knowledge of the very law that is attempting to lasso him in.
Her acting as the teenage daughter of Peck was a little too Lolita-ish, although it was not entirely the fault of the actress.
