Martin Bell - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bell was educated at The Leys School in Cambridge and Cambridge University.
Martin Bell was elected an MP with a majority of 11,000 votes – overturning a Conservative majority of over 20,000 – and thus became the first successful independent parliamentary candidate since the Second World War.
In 2001, Martin Bell was nonetheless persuaded to stand as an independent candidate against the Conservative MP Eric Pickles in the "safe" Essex constituency of Brentwood and Ongar, where there were accusations that the local Conservative Association had been infiltrated by a Pentecostal church.

Martin Bell was working as a BBC correspondent before 1997, and although he mentions he had some disquiet about how the Corporation was being run, he certainly didn't have politics marked down as a potential future career.
Bell's biography is really made up of three sections, one containing the decision to stand and being elected, the second section being that of the new-comer to Parliament, and the third being the more experienced constituency MP trying to make a difference.
Martin Bell, and indeed this book, may not be perfect, but to be honest, having an independent MP in the House of Commons can only be an aid to democracy, and long may the tradition last, whoever that MP should be.
