Martin had been racing for 12 years when I met him for the first time at a rain-sodden Monza in the spring of 1984.

Martin won the Daytona 24 Hours and that would have given him a good chance to tell some of the wonderful stories he tells about competing with the Good Old Boys of NASCAR one year when he raced in the IROC series.

Since his reluctant retirement from the Formula One cockpit at the end of 1996, Martin Brundle has established himself as one of the most eloquent and insightful TV commentators - in any sport.
The technical stuff about driving these tracks makes for great reading, but it is the anecdotes that really hook the reader, whether it's the stories of crashes like his horrific barrel-roll in Melbourne or descriptions of the parts you don't see on TV during GP weekends.
While Brundle clearly loves F1 as much as he ever did, parts do emphasise how some of the fun has gone out of grand prix racing for those who work in the sport.

Last weekend at Isola 2000 Martin Brundle made his debut in the Trophee Andros ice racing series at the wheel of a Renault Megane which is usually driven by Laurent Battut and Philippe Gervoson.
Brundle, who competed in 142 Grands Prix in the 1980s and 1990s and won the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1990, found that ice racing requires a lot of different skills and did not figure strongly in the races, in which he was up against the likes of Yvan Muller, Alain Prost and Franck Lagorce.
Brundle intends to get the hang of the sport and will be back in action again at the Lans-en-Vercors event this weekend.
