SRFN Miscellany: Doctor Martin Carthy: degree ceremony oration
Martin Carthy possesses an unrivalled foundation in the English musical traditions, and has played a seminal role in introducing these materials to new audiences over the past forty years.
As with many singers of his generation, Martin Carthy was a member of a teenage skiffle group, emulating the folk and bluegrass traditions of America, little appreciating that his native land was just as rich in its own music.
Martin Carthy, along with many others of his generation, actively participated in debates on disarmament (this was the era of the Aldermaston Marches), peace and social justice.

In the later '60s Carthy formed a highly influential duo with ace fiddler Dave Swarbrick which lasted for several years (and was rekindled 20 years later), and in the early '70s he experimented with electric guitar in the seminal folk-rock groups Steeleye Span and the Albion Country Band.

Carthy gave Simon his arrangement, chords, and words for the song, and it became the basis for Simon's own version when he returned to the United States.
In 1965, Carthy was signed to Fontana Records and recorded his debut album Martin Carthy that same year, which contained his arrangement of "Scarborough Fair," and featured contributions from fiddler Dave Swarbrick as a performer and co-arranger.
From the very first, Carthy's records became songbooks for thousands of lesser performers and less ambitious would-be folk musicians -- he literally was the Bob Dylan of the English folk revival, without the feigned anger or the affectations, but with all of the skill and depth.

Martin Carthy is one of the giants of contemporary British music.
Like thousands of others in the 1950's, Martin was hugely affected by hearing Lonnie Donegan sing "The Rock Island Line." He started to sneak off with his father's guitar disguised as a trombone, which, with unparalleled lack of success, he was then studying.
By then Martin was working alongside his wife and daughter, Norma Waterson and Eliza Carthy (both Mercury Music Prize nominees and successful artists in their own right) as Waterson:Carthy.
