Chittenden went on to attend the U.S. Military Academy at West Point graduating in June, 1884 with a “Degree required by Law” preparatory to his advancement in the United States Army.
Chittenden advanced steadily through the officer ranks of the Corps of Engineers: commissioned as 1st Lieutenant in December 1886; Captain in October 1895; Lieutenant Colonel in 1898; Major in 1904; Lieutenant Colonel in 1908; and to the rank of Brigadier-General in 1910.
The first part of the collection relates to Chittenden and his life’s works and interests, including correspondence, diaries, research notes, typescripts of articles and speeches, and publications from his own collection (many of which contain reports or articles authored by Chittenden), including several of his published books and general books on western American history.

Major Hiram Martin Chittenden was the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Seattle District Engineer from April 1906 to September 1908.
He was responsible for the Locks being concrete instead of wood; for a dual lock design, instead of a single lock; and for eliminating the proposed lock at the eastern end of the canal, consequently lowering the level of Lake Washington and preventing flooding.
When Hiram M. Chittenden arrived in 1906 as District Engineer for the Corps' Seattle District, he was alarmed to find a canal scheme underway that called for a wooden lock.

It is reported that Cobb is from Granvill NY (contradicting the information that he was "admitted" from VT?) and is currently a student at Burlington College.
Martin Chittenden (1763-1840) was at the time senator from VT. He is the son of Thomas Chittenden (1730-1797), after whom Chittenden county VT is named.

 STEAMBOAT WRECKS AT YANKTON
Hiram Martin Chittenden reported that seven steamboats were sunk between Yankton, SD and Sioux City Iowa.
The number is larger however since the Butte, Livingston and Evening Star were also reported sunk by local reporters but were not shown on Chittenden's map.
The 1881 flood which was responsible for the damage to boats in Yankton also altered the course of the Missouri River below that city away from the river meanders where the wrecks presumably lay.

In 1789 Thomas Chittenden had 44% of the vote, but the General Assembly elected Moses Robinson instead, even though he had received only 26% of the popular vote.
In 1813, although the Democratic-Republican Party candidate, Jonas Galusha, had the popular plurality and was just 155 votes short of an absolute majority, the General Assembly elected Federalist Martin Chittenden Governor by a vote of 112 to 111.
The most recent example of the General Assembly’s rejection of the plurality candidate occurred in 1976 when Republican T. Gary Buckley, who had come in second in popular vote was elected by a three-vote margin in the General Assembly over the plurality winner, John Alden.
