Reviews of "Tartuffe"   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Martin Clunes gives one of the great Moliere performances in the National Theatre's wonderful Tartuffe, says John Peter Playwrights are not always the best commentators on their own work, but Moliere got it right about his Tartuffe (Lyttelton) when he observed that hypocrites have no sense of humour.
Martin Clunes is behaving very badly indeed at the National Theatre, and it's a source of rare, rude delight.
And Martin Clunes, who sensibly plays the hypocrite as if he were a plausible plain-speaker, is wonderfully, fleshily funny as he strips down into lascivious mode - swishing his shoulder-length flaxen locks, bandy-legged in his disastrous nappy-style underpants, swinging his monastic fl robes around his head like a football rattle.

Martin Clunes' current coffee ad may try to lay to rest his Man Behaving Badly persona but it will take more than a soothing mug of Nescafe to alter his horsy Sagittarian style.
Clunes also has macho Mars in this sign, bringing out the lustful drives of the Centaur, and this planet is most associated with Clune's acting success.
Whatever aspirations Clunes may have for a change of image, he is still lumbered with Men Behaving Badly, and even the coffee ad plays on the same theme.

The plots are built on contrivances like a chess match over opera tickets or an attempt at seduction via a synthesized flamenco guitar, but the humor always springs from the petty, careless, and generally inane behavior of Dermot and Gary.
It could be tiresome squalor--and according to reviews, the American remake of the show (featuring Rob Schneider and Ron Eldard) was just that--but Clunes and Enfield invest this pair of clods with enough humanity to make their mishaps both excruciating and funny.
