Martin Dunwoody - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Professor Martin J. Dunwoody (born November 3, 1938) is professor of mathematics at the University of Southampton, England.
Dunwoody is working on geometric group theory and low dimensional topology.
He received some public attention as he claimed to have a proof for one of the Millennium Prize Problems, the Poincaré conjecture, on April 7, 2002, but he had to admit a gap in the proof five days later.

Dunwoody has revised his text several times as readers found flaws in his proof and as he found solutions.
If Dunwoody never quite fixes the leaks in his proof, he will still have proved the utility of free online preprint archives in gathering relevant expertise and focusing it on an important scientific problem.

New Scientist Breaking News - $1 million mathematical mystery "solved"
Now Martin Dunwoody of Southampton University believes he has found a way of polishing off this final gap in the proof.

New Scientist Breaking News - $1 million mathematical mystery "solved"
His strategy is now being checked by mathematicians worldwide, and if his detailed proof passes muster, Dunwoody will win one of the $1 million prizes being offered by the Clay Institute in Boston for solving any of seven key mathematical challenges.
Dunwoody's approach - outlined in a five-page preprint on his website - focuses on the properties of specific three dimensional spaces, and seems to show that Poincaré's conjecture is true.
Whether a fatal flaw will show up when the strategy is expanded into a full, formal proof is as yet unclear, however: "It's too early to tell - at least for me", says topologist Matt Brin of the State University of New York, Binghamton, who has helped Dunwoody in his attempt on the conjecture.

Indeed, cognizant of the many false "proofs" of the conjecture that have been proffered in the past, mathematicians have approached the new claim warily.

ABC News: Topology and the Million-Dollar Poincare Conjecture
May 5 It's not often that the abstract mathematical discipline of topology is in the news, but a respected British mathematician announced last month that he has proved a nearly century-old puzzle, the Poincaré conjecture, about spheres and their generalizations to higher-dimensional spaces.
The theorem has been shown to hold for every dimension except three, and should Southampton University Professor Martin Dunwoody's proposed proof (available through his Web site) withstand the scrutiny of his peers, it will finally settle this famous unsolved question.
The conjecture is so well-known and its proof has been so elusive that the Clay Institute of Boston last year offered $1 million for its solution.
