 Times Argus
Martin's father, a World War II mountain soldier, was among the group standing behind the U.S. flag and shoulder to shoulder with veterans from France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Slovenia, Spain and Switzerland for the 20th congress of the International Federation of Mountain Soldiers at the Trapp Family Lodge.
It was different tragedy that united the former soldiers Thursday morning in Stowe as they gathered on a Trapp Family Lodge green for the opening ceremonies, their flags flapping in unison.
The International Federation of Mountain Soldiers meeting ends Sunday, when the former soldiers return to their hometowns, states and countries, start sight-seeing trips or, as Tomky was planning, visit "foxhole buddies" in the region.

One year later, he costarred with Mary Martin on Broadway, originating the role of Captain Von Trapp in Rodgers and Hammerstein's The Sound of Music.
In a mid-1980s interview, Theodore Bikel noted with amusement that, in spite of his many stage and screen appearances, many fans remembered him best for his brief unsympathetic appearance as a Russian officer in the otherwise forgettable 1957 film Fraulein.
Though he has logged many impressive credits as an actor, Vienna-born Theodore Bikel prefers to think of himself -- and bill himself -- as a folksinger.

CLASSIC TRACKS: JOHN COLTRANE'S "MY FAVORITE THINGS"
It was sung by Mary Martin onstage and on the original cast album, which was Number One on the Billboard charts for 16 weeks in 1960, and in the Top 200 for six years.
At 13 minutes, 41 seconds in length, his original recorded version of the song, tracked October 21, 1960, at Atlantic Studios in New York, goes places even the world-traveling Von Trapp family (who inspired The Sound of Music) never dreamed of.
It's hard to say what it was about "My Favorite Things" that struck such a responsive chord in the listening public, but it was an immediate success.
