Goodman's main contention is that active proselytism was not a feature of Judaism before the second/third centuries AD, and that the roots of Christian proselytism lie in the peculiar nature of the Christian community immediately after the crucifixion.
Goodman builds upon this conclusion in an effort to demonstrate that the texts that are generally taken to reflect active proselytism by Jews in the period before the destruction of the temple cannot bear the weight that is placed on them.
Goodman's further argument is that information, education and apologetic were the essence of Jewish communication with outsiders before the destruction of the temple in 70 AD, and that informing with the aim of acquiring converts to Judaism only became common when Christianity was perceived as a major success and rival.

Goodman's spiritual link with Mother Meera, a contemporary Indian mystic who connects with her followers by means of her steady gaze and purportedly transformative touch, began long before meeting her in person.
Martin Goodman, the author of this book, is a former devotee of Mother Meera whose life was profoundly affected by his time with this Indian mystic.
From his experiences Martin has come to question the idea that she might be infallible, but reveals clearly the power and compassion of one of the greatest living mystics of our time.

The Timely Comics Web Page, The Beginning
Martin Goodman, in the late 1930s, was a publisher of pulp magazines, including Complete Western Book, Star Detective, Uncanny Stories, Ka-Zar, and Mystery Tales.
He was, like most publishers in the 1930s, looking for a new trend in the public's buying habits; Goodman was particularly desperate because his pulps were not successful.
These three, along with Ka-Zar the Great (a holdover from Goodman's pulps), the Jungle Terror, and the Masked Raider (and his horse Lightning), made up the cast of Marvel Comics #1 (cover dated October 1939), a book that is a landmark, for a number of reasons, in the history of superhero comics.

Ansel Goodman sold his Bedford Co. land in 1788, probably removing first to Stokes Co., NC, where Ansylem Goodman is recorded in the 1790 census with wife, two male and 3 female children, then to Adair Co., KY, where he appears in the census in 1810 and 1820.
In the 1830 census, presumed sons Ansel and Martin Goodman are in Spencer Co., IN.
This is probably the Martin G. Goodman b 1798 in TN, who later removed to Indiana with wife Nancy, who was born in Adair Co., KY in 1801.

One could also surmise that Martin and Anslow were related, probably brothers, or father and son, based on similar dates and locations.
His inventory was provided and sworn to by Robert Goodman of Wilson Co., probably Robert Sr., who was the son of the John Goodman who died in Greene Co., TN in 1790, and brother of Amos, Arthur and Stephen Goodman of Hart Co., KY. It consisted of a single note for $35.
This definitely establishes the link between the families of Ansel and John Goodman of Bedford, VA. Claiborne Goodman, son of Benjamin Goodman and Maria Williams of Hanover and Louisa Co., VA, and later of Granville Co., NC and Laurens Co., SC, also lived in Wilson Co., TN at that time.

But in an apparent power move by Martin's nephew-by-marriage, the legendary Marvel editor-in-chief Stan Lee, Chip had his executive washroom key confiscated and the boss' son was unceremoniously booted from the company, onto the pavement of Madison Avenue and out of a job.
"Goodman's David and Goliath strategy is insidiously simple and outrageous-possibly even considered dirty tactics by the competition-such as higher page rates, artwork returned to the artist, rights to the creation of an original character, and a certain amount of professional courtesy," noted Mediascene.
Martin increasingly insisted that the comics line resemble Marvel's in content and design, and some of Rovin's contributors were, according to the editor, shot down by the publisher, among them complaints that two of the line's artistic stand-outs, Chaykin and Ernie Colón, were ill-suited for their respective books.

What is more, Goodman continues, such an approach would provide little awareness of "the centrality of the Bible as a sacred text, both in the sense that its words carry specially sanctified authority and in the sense that a scroll of scripture is a sacred object" (12).
In short, in Goodman's scholarly world of "as if," "historians would still be aware of Jews as a distinct ethnic and religious group, but Jews would not seem anything like as marginal in the Graeco-Roman world as they do when their own, often jaundiced, views of the outside provide the basis for understanding them.
Martin Goodman has spent much of his scholarly career making similar points in various ways, and this volume provides a further contribution to those efforts, especially by highlighting the complexities that pertain to life "back then," just as to our own lives.

Though he reportedly died of liver cancer on April 27, 1998, the infamously shy Castaneda, according to Goodman, decided to break his No Interviews rule about four months later, rising from the dead in the midst of a lightning storm near a small village in the French Pyrenees.
He follows Goodman home, eats the fish Goodman was planning for his own supper, then crashes on the poor writer's couch.
If Goodman claimed that his account was metaphorical, a fanciful imagining of what might happen were Carlos Castaneda to appear, I might have (almost) enjoyed it, particularly the part where Castaneda grumpily suggests that the most potent weapon in the human arsenal is our ability to focus.
