"Martin Guerre" is more like a trashy novelette than an epic romance; it demands a score that treats the subject matter with an appropriate amount of importance.
Martin Guerre refuses to consummate his marriage with Bertrande, and this sends the entire town into pandemonium.
Martin dies at war, for now, and his friend Arnaud comes back to the village and takes Bertrande as his wife, under the assumed name of "Martin." Nobody seems to notice the impostor, not even Martin's family.

Since Martin Guerre has gone through as many alterations and versions as The Scarlet Pimpernel, I figured I would give it the benefit of the doubt, go in with an open mind, and hopefully be pleasantly surprised, as I was with Jekyll and Hyde a few months earlier.
Seeing Les Miserables, Miss Saigon and Martin Guerre in a row highlights not only the similarities between the shows, especially in regards to music, but also displays how the authors are moving backwards rather than forwards in their craft, with Les Miserables being the pinnacle of their work.

I saw Martin Guerre in L.A. a few years ago (the last stop Bluewizard is talking about) and though I'm not a tough critic when it comes to musicals, this one I didn't like.
I liked that we knew that he wasn't Martin Guerre and it became more about a story about the lies that we tell and how far we go to keep them and the ramifications it can have on our lives and the lives of people around us...
THE HOUSE OF MARTIN GUERRE has a score by Leslie Arden and it is truly outstanding.

Onstage, this version of Martin Guerre was dreary, boring, and painful to sit through.
The lyrics in "Miss Saigon" were truly stupid (how many words can you rhyme with "ass"?), but the "Martin Guerre" lyrics are just as bad--the lyrics in "Martin Guerre" are obviously not the work of someone for whom English is his first language.
