Martin Hannett - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hannett's trademark sound, most apparent on Joy Division's groundbreaking debut album Unknown Pleasures and its follow-up, Closer, is sparse and eerie, complementing frontman Ian Curtis' dark, depressive musings and tremorous baritone vocals.
Hannett had impressive range as a producer, as evidenced by his ability to adroitly magnify the disillusionment and disparate influences within the music of bands such as Joy Division and Basement 5, while also retaining a keen pop sense.
Hannett was portrayed by actor Andy Serkis in the 2002 film 24 Hour Party People, which was based on Tony Wilson's career as the co-founder of Factory Records and The Haçienda nightclub.

 24 Hour Party People
Martin Hannett was one of Manchester's most influential producers, forever trying to push the evolution of sound production forward.
Basically the function of Martin in the film, as opposed to what he played in real life, is that he is kind of the antithesis of Tony Wilson, he's a kind of thorn in his side and he provides a lot of the conflict in the film, difference of ideas.
And yet you don't want to be inhibited by it, because Martin Hannett is a larger than life character, but he is a Dickensian character in the sense that he's big and he's epicurian.

Being produced by Martin Hannett meant that the guitars were filtered through an array of studio and pedal effects so instead of hearing discernible notes or melodies what comes across is an ethereal and acerbic spectral noise winding around in the spaces between the aggressive punch of the drum and bass.
Martin Hannett: "I was struck years ago by a room full of air compressors at the Ferranti factory which was banging out this four-in-the-bar, industrial bass drum rhythm.
In many ways Hannett was pioneering a genre of bass and drums and it is maybe some measure of the 'newness' of this sound that it caused confusion and trepidation, leading towards judgmental comparisons with Joy Division simply because they were the most popularised and 'successful' aspect of this sound.

Drug abuse was a major feature of hannett's life and there is little doubt that his early death was related to years of misuse and experimentation.
in the late 70s, electronic music at its extreme was mainly coming out of germany from groups such as kraftwerk, but hannett never lost sight of the human element, making the machine work to complement the artists involved rather than trying to dehumanize bands or make work of a purely "synthetic" nature.
