Martin Harris was born in Eastown, New York on May 17, 1783.
Harris wanted assurances of the authenticity of the work and so Smith copied some of the characters from the plates on to a sheet of paper, now known as the Anthon transcript.
Lucy Harris, from whom Martin Harris had separated, died in the summer of 1836 and that fall on November 1, 1836, Harris married his second wife, Caroline Young.

Martin Harris having returned from his tour to New York city and reported the incidents of his journey to the Prophet, went home to Palmyra, arranged his affairs and returned again to Joseph in Pennsylvania about the 12th of April, 1828.

Martin Harris (1783-1875), a New York farmer, was one of the Three Witnesses to the divine origin of the Book of Mormon.
Harris and Smith believed that these visits fulfilled a prophecy in Isaiah 29:11-14 concerning a book to be translated by an unlearned man. Harris hoped that the scholars' comments would help win financial and religious support for the Book of Mormon in the community (see Anthon Transcript).
Martin Harris was present at the organization of the Church on April 6, 1830, and was baptized that day by Oliver Cowdery.

Martin's persistent requests to show this manuscript to his family wearied Joseph into letting him take it to Palmyra, where its pages were stolen from him, lost, and probably burned.
Finally, in 1870, Martin's desire to be reunited with his family in Utah resulted in a warm invitation from Brigham Young, a ticket for his passage, and an official escort from one of the Presidents of Seventy.
Martin Harris died in Clarkston, Utah, in 1875, at age 92.

Smith gave Harris a copy of some of the characters, along with a translation, which Harris then presented to at least three scholars in the eastern United States.
Harris said that Professor Anthon gave him a certificate verifying the authenticity of the characters but that when Anthon learned that Joseph Smith claimed to have received the plates from an angel, he took the certificate back and destroyed it.
In both accounts, apparently to dissociate himself from appearing to promote the book, he maintained that he told Harris that he (Harris) was a victim of a fraud.
