Martin I (1356 – 31 May 1410), 'the Elder', 'the Humane', 'the Ecclesiastic', King of Aragon (1396 - 1410) and King of Sicily (1409 - 1410), was the last direct descendant in legitimate male line of Wilfred 'the Hairy', Count of Barcelona to rule Aragon.
He was the second son of King Peter IV of Aragon and Eleanor of Sicily (Leonora of Trinacria), princess of the Sicilian branch of the House of Aragon.
Thus, Martin's death led to a two-year interregnum, which was ended by the Pact of Caspe, in which Martin's nephew (a younger son of a sister of Martin's) Ferdinand I of Aragon, infante of Castile's House of Trastámara was chosen as the next king from among at least five contenders.

Martin I of Aragon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
He was the second son of King Peter IV of Aragon and Leonora of Trinacria, princess of that cadet branch of the House of Aragon.
Martin's military intervention rescued the imprisoned Benedict in 1403 from the clutches of his rivals and the Pope settled in Valencia's countryside.
Thus, Martin's death led to a two-year interregnum, which was ended by the Pact of Caspe, in which Ferdinand I of Aragon, infante of Castile's House of Trastámara, younger son of a sister of Martin's, was chosen as the next king from among at least five contenders.

Martin   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Peter IV of Aragon, on the grounds that females were excluded from succession to the Sicilian crown, claimed it for himself as the nearest male heir; and Mary underwent a series of abductions.
Peter IV died in 1387, leaving Aragon to his elder son John I; the queen of Sicily was brought to Spain in 1388, and her marriage to the younger Martin took place in 1390.
On Martin's death, however, in 1410, this succession was contested; and Ferdinand of Antequera, son of Peter IV's daughter Leonor, having been chosen king of Aragon as Ferdinand I in 1412, defeated Fadrique's partisans and reestablished Blanche's authority as his regent in Sicily.

This is what happened to Martin I of Aragon — his only surviving male descendant was an illegitimate grandson, which in accordance with the Catholic Church, was barred from succession.
Aragon also observed Salic Law, an old Frankish custom that forbade the passing of the crown to any males bore to female descendants of the king.
Nonetheless, Martin I put forth his nephew, Ferdinand of Castile, who was the son of the King of Castile and Pedro IV's daughter Leonor (even though her grandson and Ferdinand's nephew, King Juan of Castile had a better claim).
