Davey was less than half the age of the 64-year-old incumbent, N.J.A. Minich, publisher of the Kent Bulletin, who was seeking a third term as mayor.
Davey criticized Minich for "four years of inaction" and, in his final message to voters, described the election as a choice between "standstill government" and progress.
Martin L. Davey served three terms as mayor of Kent, cutting short his last one in 1918, when he was elected to the U.S. Congress.

Davey countered by swearing out a warrant for Hopkins on a charge of criminal libel and, in an address to the legislature, asserting that Hopkins was a liar and a coward, and daring him to come into Ohio.
Davey's feud with the Roosevelt administration was suspended during the 1936 campaign, but it was resumed shortly thereafter when he called out the National Guard to maintain law and order during a steel strike in the Mahoning Valley.

One story we inadvertently overlooked concerned the Davey Compressor Co., an outgrowth of the inventive genius of Paul Davey Sr., who was the brother of Martin L. Davey, Ohio's governor and the president of The Davey Tree Expert Co., which their father, John Davey, founded.
Davey and his son, Paul Davey Jr., it employed more than 500 people in Kent.
Tom Myers, the grandson of Paul Davey Sr., and his father, the late Joseph Myers, the industrialist, in the 1980s bought up the remnants of what remained in Chicago and repatriated them back to Kent.
