  MARTIN L.GORE - Counterfeit 2
Gore’s second solo album comes in the shape of radically reworked tracks, originally made famous by the likes of Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds, Kurt Weill, John Lennon, Brian Eno and David Essex.
However, Gore has done a good job and the success of this album lies in the fact that, reworks or not, its simply an album of strong songs that are likely to hugely appeal to the electronic-loving fraternity.
Having said that, given the right conditions, Gore is a superb vocalist in his own right, and he takes the opportunity to use it brilliantly on Kurt Weill’s incredibly romantic 'Lost In The Stars'.

Moving Hands Music Magazine - Martin L. Gore, Counterfeit2
Martin L. GoreĀ… a name that speaks volumes in itself and a musician I doubt I need to introduce any further.
First of all, the ambition Gore has had with this album is not quite praising the artist he’s covered, although to some extent this is inevitable.
Of course, Gore has added much of himself to the songs, the mostly electronic production and of course Gore’s vocal style and musical sense have had a strong impact on these versions and I see little point in making comparisons.

 Martin L. Gore: Counterfeit 2 (2003): Reviews
Gore's reworkings sparkle with visceral emotion, aching vulnerability, and sublime intensity.
Gore is almost too polite to these songs, but surely that can be forgiven when his love for them is so apparent.
Gore's brittle choirboy voice lacks the depth and grandeur of Gahan's, but he still gamely takes on some adventurous choices.

Martin L Gore - Release Music Magazine Spotlight
Martin is keen to point out that this is a joint album, even though it is his name on the cover.
Martin then goes on to describe his influences for the album, and a possible dream collaboration:
The album can best be described as being allowed to look at Martin Gore's record collection, but hearing the music using his ears, which should prove interesting for not just die-hard Depeche Mode fans, but fans of intelligent and inspirational music in general.

Still, Gore plays Weill’s "Lost in the Stars" piano-and-strings straight, and seekers of tasteful ambience may enjoy the idea of various cult rock, folk, and country songs being transformed into Mode-ish mood music.
All the songs on this CD were written by someone else, not a drop of Martin's beautiful poetic structure anywhere.
Martin Gore is able to capture a different sound in this album that reminds me at times of Autechre and Andrea Parker.

Martin L. Gore, keyboardist and vocalist, released an EP of cover songs and traditionals in 1989, known simply as The Counterfeit EP.
While DM frontman Dave Gahan is launching his solo career with a new album, Gore takes on many of his worthy contemporaries, and does a superb job.
Whether one is a gigantic fan of Cave and The Bad Seeds or not, the minute the vocals hit in Gore's rendition, it is very easy to tell that this track was originally penned and performed by Australia's beloved musical genius, and one is almost disappointed that Cave himself didn't jump in for the fun.

Gore sings these tracks with enough personality and depth to claim these songs as his own.
Gore released this solo project at what I consider to be the height of DM's darkest and most creative period.
Gore has some of the best vocals in the business and on this album we can truly hear that he is not just the once in a while singer for Depeche Mode but an accomplished singer in his own right.

 Martin L. Gore ‘Counterfeit 2’
Predictably Gore’s song choices cover the same ground as his own tales of self-awkwardness, sexual dalliances and religious zeal.
Recorded previously by both Bob Dylan and Led Zeppelin, Gore transforms it into a hymn for androids as he contemplates his mortality in a rich bed of layered synth loops, bashful beats and sinister guitar snarls.
Gore’s rendition of Julee Cruise’s ‘In My Other World’ would certainly impress her biggest fan David Lynch and is as much a tribute to his score composer Angelo Badalamenti.

Almost without exception, Gore's interpretations of songs by Nick Cave, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Kurt Weill and even John Lennon are flaccid, lifeless and passive.
Gore's sample quilting and other technical handiwork is interesting at times even if the songs are not.
Martin Gore has been Depeche Mode's sole songwriter since their second album back in 1982.

There was a kind of hushed suspense before the show, while a DJ played various clicks’n’cuts records, including a nod to Martin by playing Lassigue Bendthaus glorious hyperelectronic cover of Rolling Stone’s “Angie”.
Martin came on stage to roaring applause, and starting moving through the first three tracks from “Counterfeit 2”.

 SOUNDTHESIRENS.COM - Review :: Martin L. Gore - Loverman EP2
Martin Gore may be one to reckon with in the style department when he primps his songwriting talent to music fashionistas Depeche Mode, but when he has stepped away on his own, the visual specter of his work tends to come second to the more existent body.
The second mix also increases the song’s length (to a meaty 6:42; still not as long as the album version), which unfortunately means more of Gore blundering through Cave.
Once Gore is done with “Loverman” however, he shows a little bit of pizzazz with the cover of Nico’s “Das Lied Von Einsamen Madchen”, the single’s b-side so to speak.

Martin Gore contributed his own version of Cohen's 'Coming Back to You'.
In general an enjoyable album and pretty much what we could expect of a follow-up to his first solo album, but here are also a few weaker tracks: 'I Cast a Lonesome Shadow' suffer from a more or less annoying over-production of 'punctual blips' that puts a shadow to Martin's vocals.
The DVD concert is short but very nice and shows that Martin sings live just as good as on his records, his voice is clear and effortless and simply amazing, not many artists can sing as good live as he can (but his stage dance, well you have to see it yourself).
