Martin noted several discouraging facts at this session: by this date the start of GCMS science testing had slipped by six months (from early 1971 to October 1971); after four years of work the breadboard was just ready; and the GCMS was now getting too heavy.

Martin Marietta notes that "the most efficient [MOR MSSR] mission would locate the approach trajectory (and therefore the rendezvous orbit) and the departure trajectory in the same plane." This would, however, severely limit accessible landing sites.
The active Orbiter fires its rocket at apoapsis (orbit high point) to match orbit plane with the third stage and raise its periapsis to 2250 kilometers, then lowers its apoapsis to enter phasing orbit to place the vehicles in the correct relative positions for rendezvous.
