Martin Newell is an English singer songwriter and poet.
Martin produced these tapes under the name 'The Cleaners From Venus'; he and his friend Lol, who played drums on those early tapes, worked in a Colchester restaurant as cleaners.
Eventually it came to pass that the music industry became interested in the Cleaners, who by this time were Martin Newell and Giles Smith.

 Martin's later releases are all meritorious, but the GLE album is a highmark in both Martin's catalog and in pop music in general.
Martin's new direction seems to be rather more jazzy - his next album will (once again) feature the keyboard talents of Giles Smith (author of "Lost In Music" - the best book about trying to make it in bands that I have ever read) and ought to be out sometime next year.
Martin's follow-up album to "The Greatest Living Englishman" was "The Off White Album" which was reissued last year by Cherry Red.

It is however of great historic value as it regrouped the original line up of Martin Newell and Lol Elliot to record at Sea Level studio and it spawned the original studio version of ‘Johnny the Moondog’ as well as ‘Only a shadow’.
True to our spirit of good intentions and then running out of cash we also had Martin compile a best of the DIY tape years which was scheduled to be released as an album called The purple love machine is incredibly groovy.

 The History of The Teapot.
The teapot was made by Melitta in 1974 and originally belonged to Martin Newell and his wife, Sandra - who purchased it from ZCMI, (a department store in Salt Lake City).
Jim Blinn (in one of his excellent "Mathmatics!" videos) proves an interesting version of Pythagoras' theorum: Construct a (2D) teapot on each side of a right triangle and the area of the teapot on the hypotenuse is equal to the areas of the teapots on the other two sides.

Welshman Martin Newell, an off-again, on-again songwriter and accomplished poet, sent off a couple of demo tracks to XTC's Andy Partridge.
Partridge (who's recently broken his stage silence via a one-song cameo with Aimee Mann in New York) was so token with the tape, he offered to produce and perform a handful of the backing tracks.
However, Partridge's production (at times stark and refreshingly homespun) along with Newell's generally strong text keeps these songs from drifting into Rutle-land, ever to be forgotten as McCartney mimicry gone wrong.
