		OPITZ VON BOBERFELD, MARTIN (1597-1639), German poet, was born at Bunzla.0 in Silesia on the 23rd of December 1597, the son of a prosperous citizen.
		Opitz was the head of the so-called First Silesian School of poets(see GERMANY :Literature), and was during his life regarded as the greatest German poet.
		In 1624 Opitz published a collected edition of his poetry under the title Acht Bucher deutscher Poematum (though, owing to a mistake on the part of the printer, there are only five books); his Dafne (1627), to which Heinrich Schutz composed the music, is the earliest German opera.

		Besides numerous translations, Opitz edited (1639) Das Annolied, a Middle High German poem of the end of the 11th century, and thus preserved it from oblivion since the original manuscript is now lost.

		In 1639, Martin Opitz rescued for us the only complete surviving text of the Annolied (circa 1083), 1 and now Graeme Dunphy has made available a reprint of the Opitz edition and with it Opitz’s prologue and notes, a new English translation, and the translator’s informative notes on the translation and on Opitz’s commentary.
		In his prologue Opitz expresses the purpose of the edition, which is to demonstrate that the German language was inherited by his contemporaries in an unbroken line from earliest times.
		Opitz’s edition has been rarely studied, yet is worthy of study in its own right to understand how scholars of the seventeenth century worked and thought.

		Martin Opitz, son of Sebastian Opitz, a butcher, entered the University of Frankfort on the Oder in 1618 and in 1619 went to Heidelberg, where he was a private tutor while studying literature and philosophy at the university.
		In 1622 Martin Opitz became Professor of Philosophy in the Gymnasium founded at Weissenburg in Transylvania by Prince Bethlem Gabor.
		For a time he was private secretary to the Burgrave Carl Hannibal von Dohna, who began the Counter Reformation against the Protestants of Silesia in 1628; Opitz wrote poems in praise of him.
