Side by side with her husband, Martin Provensen, they created memorable, award-winning picture books for forty-three years, books in which their individual contributions were never evident, only their teamwork.
Martin Provensen died of a heart attack in 1987, at age 70.
Martin and I really were one artist." In 1990, with the encouragement of her editor, Linda Zuckerman at Viking Press, and her innate curiosity and love of research, Alice Provensen published The Buck Stops Here: the Presidents of the United States.

Martin Provensen left his job sketching character designs and storyboards for Disney films -- ''Pinocchio," ''Fantasia," ''Dumbo" -- and signed up with the Navy.
The Provensens adopted a simpler, airier style, built around thin earth tone washes, for many of their books of the 1970s -- particularly several inspired by life on their farm.
In March 1987, Martin was felled by a heart attack.

CHILDREN'S BOOKS; On the Streets Where We Live - New York Times
Provensen died last spring), should put it to rest.
This is the story of a depressed, semirural area that is taken over by suburban development, and it could well be called the first antigentrification children's book ever written.
The Provensens' message has usually been nonjudgmental - ''There is always something interesting to see,'' as they say in ''Town and Country,'' their splendid 1984 ode to the pleasures of both urban and rural living - but this time their reserved tone becomes a bit sharper.

Alice and Martin Provensen certainly had a good run in the early 1980s.
This may not be THE most exciting book in the world (the Provensens excel in moods and tones rather than fast-paced adrenaline rushes) but there is a lovely feel to it that outweighs its occasional lapses into deadened flatness.
This charming book by Alice and Martin Provensen follows this quest from the development of the "Bleriot I" (too small for anyone to sit in) to the "Bleriot II" glider until finally with the "Bleriot VII" Louis had an aeroplane that could really fly.
