Martin Rotsey, the band's other guitarist, recounts, "We got out our acoustic guitars and the elders said, 'We'll sing a few songs, and you sing a few songs.' So we played some well-known songs like Dylan's 'Blowin' In The Wind' and 'The Last Time.' They'd respond with these ancient chants.
It was the close of the "era of the star guitar player," according to Moginie, as his influences moved from rock stalwarts like Creedence Clearwater Revival and Led Zeppelin to the white-hot punk of the Sex Pistols and the Clash.
Rotsey rocks a '70s Les Paul Pro through his own JCM900, and also stomps a Big Muff and various Boss pedals.

Originally from England, Martin got his first guitar at 12 (good age for starting), and met up with Rob when he was in Schwampy Moose.
Originally he joined as a temporary replacement for bassist Andrew James, but when Bear came back Martin stayed on as a guitarist.

...Very early on, Rotsey perfected the classic guitarist as machine-gun-toting-guerilla stance, cigarette smouldering from his lip, shoulders hunched, legs in a crouch as though poised to run a 100 metre dash, trigger hand chopping away at the strings as he surveyed the audience.
All eyes flash to his lips, but they fail to reveal the faintest trace of a smile.
Sentimentality, as you'd suspect of someone whose sense of humour stretches to thoughts of inflicting one of the Dead Kennedys' more rabid punk efforts on the desert people, is not one of Rotsey's strong points.

His guitar playing perfectly complements Martin Rotsey and he often turns his hand to the keyboards as well.
Rob is a founder member of the original band which was called "Farm", he is also one of Midnight Oils' main songwriters.

The Midnight Oil lineup remained quite stable over the band's long career: Garrett as lead singer (and, early on, synthesizer), Jim Moginie on guitar and keyboards, Martin Rotsey on guitar, and Rob Hirst on drums.
Andrew "Bear" James, the first bass player, left in 1979, replaced by Peter Gifford, who left in 1989 to be replaced by New Zealander Bones Hillman, (ex Swingers), who remained with the group until its dissolution in 2002.
