Scorcese is not trying to tell a story from the history books so much as to tell us something about the nature of America, of its people and its democracy.

Scorcese constantly makes the parallel of the "Civil" War: this is War in "Cities." Yet by the end of the film the "individualistic" violence of the gangs gets entirely superceded by the far more impersonal violence of the state -which simply slaughters everybody when they get out of line.

Spawning both politically charged folk ballads that came to embody the very spirit of the turbulent 1960s ("The Times They are a-Changin") and sprawling, stream-of-consciousness litanies that irrevocably changed the face of rock music ("Like a Rolling Stone"), the years between 1961-1966 were inarguably the most artistically fertile for legendary singer/songwriter Bob Dylan.

But it has to be Goodfellas, not just because its a great film but the fact it's based on a true story makes it even better.
However it is also overly glossy, painfully simplistic in its themes and narrative and the characters lack the multiple dimensions that one usually associates with Scorcese.

 GoodFellas (1990)
Warner Bros.' GoodFellas (1990) is director Martin Scorsese's stylistic masterpiece - a follow-up film to his own Mean Streets (1973), released in the year of Francis Ford Coppola's third installment of his gangster epic - The Godfather, Part III (1990).
It is a nitty-gritty, unflinching treatment of a true mobster story about three violent "wiseguys" [Mafia slang for 'gangsters'], enhanced by the Italian-American director's own experience of his upbringing in Little Italy.
Film posters were subtitled: "Three Decades of Life in the Mafia." The real-life story concerned a low-level, marginalized gangster of mixed ethnic roots (half-Irish, half-Sicilian) - Henry Hill, who ultimately turned informant for the FBI and entered the Federal Witness Protection Program to save his life by disappearing from view.
