Martin used a Braun tape deck which had (if I recall correctly) 2 speeds, probably.
When we approached Bob Weston to fill Martin's position, we told him he could use current digital technology (which accomplishes Martin's antics in an easier fashion).
Bob learned Martin's parts as a starting point, but has added alot of his own gestures, especially in the new songs.

Swope as an arbitrator." The April 9, 1990 letter gave Wolff further pause, because the letter referred to provisions in the Lease relating to whether, for purposes of ascertaining the fair market value of the subject property, the building should be included in the arbitrator's determination of the basic annual rent for the property.
Swope had any familiarity with the lease provisions on this lease" prior to the arbitration proceeding, particularly in light of the fact that the inclusion of the building in the arbitrators' valuation of the property was a matter of dispute among the parties.
Swope also rejected the trustees' argument that the basic annual rent should be reopened every five years with incremental rent increases, presumably because such a request was in contravention to the express terms of the Lease, which provided for an initial ten-year rent period and three fifteen-year rent periods thereafter.

Miller contacted his friend Martin Swope, with whom he had earlier written some John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen-inspired pieces for piano and tape.
Swope's role evolved quickly until he was an integral part of the group, receiving equal credit on albums; in addition to tape effects (both in the studio and in live performances, as documented on The Horrible Truth About Burma) Swope acted as the group's live audio engineer.
Miller and Swope then went on to form the quieter Birdsongs Of The Mesozoic, which they both left in the 90s, Miller to produce several solo efforts and film scores, and Swope to semi-reclusion in Hawaii.

This was Swope's doing; he added a dimension to their sound that blew away most bands of their day and he anticipated the electronic revolution whose prime would come in the 90s and 2000s.

Swope moved into an apartment in Brighton with Miller and Conley and began to intrigue the pair with the tape loops he was experimenting with -- tape loops that would soon bring a distinctive avant edge to the Mission Of Burma sound.
Swope was ahead of his time with the tape-loop experiments -- Miller remembers how early audiences were often confused by Burma's all-encompassing din.

However, it's extremely undeniable that the brilliant nuances of tape manipulator Martin Swope was an extremely important factor as to why Mission of Burma is, and will be one of the most important bands in the history of American music.
Having only released a couple of seven-inch singles, one EP "Signals, Calls and Marches", one LP "Vs." and their final recording, "The Horrible Truth About Burma" which was a compilation of live recordings from their final tour in 1985; Mission of Burma called it quits and went their separate ways on good terms.
Having recently regrouped in the past couple of years; what was supposed to be a couple of one-off reunion shows has since turned into a full-blown documentary, subsequent album and tour.

 Birdsongs Of The Mesozoic
Formed in February 1979 when guitarist/vocalist Roger Miller and bassist/vocalist Clint Conley, fresh from the break-up of the band Moving Parts, decided to join forces with drummer/vocalist Peter Prescott, who had just parted company with the Molls.
M.O.B. worked as a trio until the summer of 1979, when they drafted Martin Swope to provide what was commonly seen as the "x- factor" in their sound.
Swope, who had worked with Miller in bands around their hometown of Ann Arbor, MI, added tape loops and sonic manipulations (from a visually unobtrusive position behind the soundboard) that often left audiences wondering how the trio on stage were creating the sounds that they were hearing.

Their "power-trio-plus" line-up was key: Clint Conley (bass), Roger Miller (guitar), Peter Prescott (drums) and Martin Swope (tape loops) simply combusted as a musical unit.
Prescott's drumming pounded it out in tasteful 4/4, and Swope's tape fuckery was nicely disconcerting: today he'd be the guy making weird noises on a sampler.
After the band's demise, Miller went on to quieter musical projects, including playing piano in the minimalist Birdsongs Of The Mesozoic (with Martin Swope), the rock trio No-Man and numerous solo recordings.
