Martin Tielli, born in 1967 in Italy, is a Canadian singer-songwriter.
Tielli's guitar style is textured and flamboyant, and his vocal style is acrobatic (he has an extremely developed falsetto range).
His youngest brother Doug was in People from Earth with John Tielli, and went on to play with artists such as Tamara Williamson.

Tielli is incapable of avoiding silly-isms and uncomfortable language, but more often than not, it all seems to work when delivered with those cheeky vocals and soaring instrumentation.
Martin’s guitar work is flawless, unless it wasn't meant to be, and dynamic vocals seem to sit in the very room with you.
Martin Tielli is an artist with a capitol A, encapsulating all that that means (see sex, drugs and rotten record companies).

In 2003, Martin committed to the most tragically ambitious music project to come out of Canada's independent music scene in a very long time: four wildly divergent CDs, packaged in collector's edition tin cases with original artwork by Tielli, one year for delivery.

Tielli is best known for his perfect vocal and guitar caterwauling, and for song-writing with the Toronto rock group the Rheostatics.
In a photocopied note accompanying the record, handwritten by Tielli to the subscriber, he states, "I apologize for the delay on this first offering but I figured that every bit better it could be--it would be." The selection and ordering of tracks was, apparently, a painstaking process.
Tielli has obviously taken the necessary time to ensure that all aspects of this project are aesthetic.

There is little doubt that the record would have had a hard time coming close to breaking even if Tielli had had to have the support of a business hoping to make money, rather than a grant giving him full artistic control.
It's the kind of record you'll listen to a thousand times just to catch the slightest glimpse at its meanings, which from one minute to the next are either profound or insipid.
Tielli sounds like a more-serious Jack Black, but it would be a mistake to lump him in the humor section.

Anyone who knows Martin Tielli from the Rheostatics would have at some point questioned the musicians sanity.
Tielli states that the first ever concert that he ever attended was a Bruce Cockburn/ Murray McLaughlin show and now he is actually performing with many of the same musicians.
Like I said, this is a strange album but if you have the time and patience (read: 5-10 listens) you will be rewarded with one of the most compelling releases that Tielli has ever played a part of.

We Didn't Even Suspect He Was the Poppy Salesman (2001) -- If you're going to go solo, like I've always said, it's good to sound different from the original band, and Martin does sound different than the Rheostatics when by himself.
This album is mostly well-played acoustic guitar, interesting (kinda spooky, quiet) songs.

Back in September we told you that the much-worshipped Martin Tielli had committed himself to a subscription program, in which he would send subscribers a series of four albums.
The second disc is called Shoenberg Cabarets and Tielli will celebrate its mail-out with a handful of shows later this month.
Danny G. is described as "a portrait of rural southern Ontario inside the true and complex story of a haunted town." New Gold, on the other hand, is a more symphonic affair that Tielli worked on with producer Jon Goldsmith.

Stepping out from his Rheostatics duties, prolific Martin Tielli shows off yet another solo record of quirky pace changes, enchanting story lines and Bowie's voice.
He's always had Bowie's voice, and since Bowie ain't using it for much good these days, that ain't a bad thing.
The tempo twists and herky jerky, turn on a dime mood swings may not thrill everyone, but those searching for a captivating cabaret style record of reach for the stars scope will surely find a warm home for this, his best one yet.
