Martin Vahl (1749-1804) – the first Norwegian professor of botany.
This paper commemorates the 250th anniversary of the birth of the Norwegian botanist Martin Vahl, presenting the known facts about his childhood and youth in Bergen, his study years in Copenhagen and Uppsala (with Linnaeus 1770-1774)) and his scientific activity, mainly as professor in Copenhagen(1786-1804).
His main contribution is that of preparing and publishing several fascicles of the prestigious «Flora danica», comprising both flowering plants and cryptogams, particularly fungi and lichens, and describing plants from exotic regions of interest to the Danish Crown (West Indies, West Africa and India (Tranquebar)), altogether 1100 new species.

Christen Smith’s diary from the Canary Islands and his importance for the Canarian botany
The Norwegian botanist Martin Vahl, Professor in Botany in Copenhagen, who had been a student under Carl von Linné, inspired and recommended his students to make attempts to explore the flora of southern latitudes.
Vahl had himself worked as a botanist in Spain, and surely was one of the reasons why Smith’s journey to the Canary Islands found place!
The successor of Martin Vahl in the Copenhagen professorship, Jens Wilkens Hornemann, likewise was an inspirator and besides became a good friend of Smith.

Its first professor, Martin Vahl, worked in Copenhagen (1786-1804), and when our first national university was founded, the first professor in botany (and natural economy), Christen Smith, unfortunately died before he could start any activity, during the British Congo-expedition in 1816.
It was left to another Vahl pupil, Jens Rathke, who was professor of natural sciences and who had actually specialized in zoology, to establish botany as a subject.
He managed to do so in spite of several difficulties, some the result of the political changes, and established a herbarium, a library and a botanical garden; this mainly through his close friendship with a third Vahl student, and his successor in Copenhagen, J.W. Hornemann.

There are four principal species valued for their bark: Cinchona pubescens Vahl; Cinchona micrantha Ruiz & Pav.; Cinchona calisaya Wedd; and Cinchona officinalis L. Only Cinchona pubescens and Cinchona calisaya have been commercially important, although Cinchona officinalis was the first of the species to be described scientifically.
