Essie Quillen of Neon, KY is a great niece of Martin Van Buren Bates and although she was born in 1900, 19 years before Bates died, she never saw "Big Uncle" as they called him.
Bates is quoted as having written that the first was a girl who weighed 18 pounds at her birth in 1872 and seven years later a boy was lost soon after birth who weighed 22 pounds.

Martin Van Buren Bates (November 9, 1837 – January 7, 1919), known as the "Kentucky Giant" among other nicknames, was an American Civil War era American famed for his incredibly large size.
She and Martin soon got to know each other, and were married during an 1871 tour of the circus in Europe.
Martin and his wife returned to Ohio in 1872 and settled down in Seville, but in May 1874, their eighteen-pound (8.2 kg) child was born stillborn, and to relieve their grief they took a trip to Europe again, but this time not as part of the circus.

    Martin Van  Buren Bates was born November 9, 1837 in Letcher County, Kentucky at  the mouth of Boone Fork of the North Fork of the Kentucky River where Kona is now located.  He was the youngest child of John Wallis Bates and Sarah Waltrip and had eleven brothers and sisters.
    Martin, according to all reports, was a normal sized child until about the age of seven.  He grew so rapidly his parents would not permit him to do much work for fear he would die.  By 13, he weighed 300 pounds and he continued to grow until his height was proportionate to his weight.
Relatives of Martin Van Buren Bates in Letcher County, KY remember their parents and grandparents talking about The Kentucky Giant and referred to him as - "Bud Bates", "Brother Bates", "Uncle Brother", "Baby Bates", and of course the "Kentucky Giant" or "Giant Bates".

Martin and Anna were advertised as “the largest married couple in the world” and travelled together in Europe for 14 months.
