Martin Walser was born in Wasserburg on Lake Constance in 1927.
The intensity of the resulting »Walser Bubis debate«, as well as reactions to his novel »Tod eines Kritikers« (2002; t: Death of a Critic), mark out the arbitrary and indistinct intellectual and moral nature of the discussion of Germany’s past.
Walser, who has always expressed controversial opinions on subjects of current political interest alongside his literary activities, is one of the most significant authors of German postwar literature, and he has received countless prizes for his literary work, among them the Georg Büchner Prize in 1981.

Walser, 75, is one of post-war Germany’s most important writers, the author of such novels as Ein fliehendes Pferd (A Runaway Horse) and Das Schwanenhaus (Swan Villa).
When Walser was accused of being an anti-Semite in 1998, after remarking that Auschwitz should no longer be held over Germany as a "moral cudgel," Reich-Ranicki came to his defense.
Speaking to Walser directly, he said, "This book has upset both my wife and myself deeply and it pains me to think that such a book could be written in Germany in 2002 and by such a well-known writer." It pains me, too, but it sure as hell doesn’t surprise me.

TWIG - Acclaimed German novelist Martin Walser’s latest work, Death of a Critic, won’t be published until summer, but it is already the talk of the German literary world.
To Schirrmacher, Walser’s book is a thinly fictionalized account of the novelist’s long-running feud with the prominent German literary critic Marcel Reich-Ranicki, who appears in the novel barely disguised as Ehrl-Koenig.
Martin Walser had already been accused of making anti-Semitic remarks in a speech he gave after winning the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade in 1998.

This article was published in Die Tageszeitung on December 19, 1998, and addresses Martin Walser's speech two months earlier at the Frankfurt Book Fair in which Walser, a prominent German novelist, decried the "Holocaust industry" of memorials and commemoration.
This is where many agree with Martin Walser, who drastically expresses this in his militaristic language such as "soldiers of opinions" who daily shoot about with their "pistol of morals" -- a revealing mixture of exaggerated self pity and moral paranoia.
This is what is so scandalous in Walser's speech: He does not call for analysis in order to find out why this public remembering fails so often, but instead stirs up vague suspicions.
