Marten Jacobszoon Heemskerk van Veen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Marten Jacobszoon Heemskerk van Veen (1498 – October 1, 1574), was one of the leading Dutch portrait and religious painters of the 16th century, famous for his depictions of the Seven Wonders of the World.
He was born at Heemskerk in Holland, and apprenticed by his father, a small farmer, to Cornelis Willemsz and Jan Lucasz in Haarlem.
There he studied under a local master whom he soon deserted for Jan van Scorel of Haarlem.

Exhibit uncovers hidden Masters -- Thursday, March 11, 1999
Martin van Heemskerck's exquisitely rendered, lively "Susannah and the Elders" (1532?) exemplifies this synthesis of Dutch and Classical styles with its classical backdrop and Northern humanism.
During the prosperity and cultural flowering of Northern Europe, many artists, like van Heemskerck, traveled to Italy to study the Renaissance painters, bringing the classical style to the somber portraiture of Dutch Master paintings.
Even in the most hastily created fl and white drawing, the genius for expressive and vivid faces comes through, and it is these portraits of contemporary Dutch life that are the highlight of the exhibition.

Northerners, such as Francisco de Hollanda, Martin van Heemskerck, Hieronymus Cock and Jacques Androuet du Cerceau developed their own type of sketchbook, specializing in idealized perspectival ruins, which were sometimes a conscious combination of real and phantastic elements.
We have already noted that a fascination with pseudo-perspectival space developed in Flanders in the early fifteenth century at the same time that Brunelleschi and Alberti were exploring the principles of perspective in Florence (pl. 8-11).
In the mathematical realm, van Schooten's (1659, 1660) treatise on conic sections was the only noteworthy publication in Amsterdam during the seventeenth century.

 Wall Fountains: Florentine Influence
Four ancient statues were there incorporated into wall fountains; three river gods, the Nile, Tiber, and Tigris, and the recumbent female figure then known as "Cleopatra." It was popular to use these themes in wall fountains for many years.
These wall fountains have long since been dismantled, and their marbles deposited in museums; but a drawing by Martin van Heemskerck preserves the form of the wall fountain of the Tigris, designed by Michelangelo at the request of Clement VII, and therefore to be dated during the years of his pontificate, 1523 to 1534.
At first glance, one is struck by the apparent formality of the single niche wall fountains reproduced in the sketches.
