Martinborough is the capital of the Wairarapa wine region.
He was one of a handful of winemaking pioneers in Martinborough attracted to the area by two key features -- the localised, free-draining shingle terrace some 20 metres deep, and the lowest rainfall records of anywhere in the North Island.
Its 35 hectares of established vines grow at the highest point on the Martinborough alluvial terrace, where the rich alluvial gravels are deepest, meaning the winery's vines grow in premium stony and free-draining soils.
