Martok - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Martok is a fictional character in the Star Trek universe.
In By Inferno's Light, Martok escaped and returned to the Alpha Quadrant with Garak, Worf, and Julian Bashir, and was made commander of the Klingon forces on Deep Space Nine (some of the Klingons under Martok's command took to calling him the "one-eyed giant", although never to his face for obvious reasons).
Martok, leading the Klingon fleet; Admiral Ross and Captain Sisko, leading the Federation fleet; and the Romulans attacked and defeated the Dominion.

 Martok - Memory Alpha
Martok was a Klingon warrior who rose to the rank of general in the Klingon Defense Forces, and later became Chancellor of the Klingon High Council.
Martok was born in the lowlands of Ketha Province on Qo'noS to a common family.
Martok was initially unaccustomed to commanding a Klingon warship, and, combined with the crew's already-low morale (thanks to a long string of defeats against the Dominion), made for a dangerous situation aboard the Bird-of-Prey.

Martok's wife was Sirella, who carried the title of Mistress of the House of Martok and therefore had to approve of Worf's bride, Jadzia Dax, before they could get married.
Martok was blamed for these costly defeats, but refused to question Gowron, even though he knew that Gowron had intended the missions to undermine Martok's image.

Gowron - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was later learned that these actions were taken under the advisement of the Empire's most important commander, General Martok, who was later found to be a Changeling (one of the shapeshifting Founders and agents of the Dominion), who had kidnapped the real Martok.
Months later in 2373, the real Martok was discovered in a Dominion asteroid prison by Worf and Garak, and subsequently rescued.
In 2375, Gowron relieved Martok of command of the Klingon forces, and decided to lead the forces himself, despite having never distinguished himself as a military commander or tactician.

Some of Martok's rationales for avoiding battle make sense, slightly so even in Klingon terms: The mission is to find the B'Moth, not sacrifice the Rotarran in a blaze of glory, he explains to Worf and the crew.
But there are signs Martok is slipping, and through the course of the episode they become progressively more evident: At one point he completely avoids a confrontation with a Jem'Hadar fighter that would've been an easy victory.
Martok making Worf an official member of his family's house because of his honorable actions struck me as very sensible, and was quite moving--easily the best part of the show.

Martok focused his vision, saw that the body's "head" was lying against the base of the post.

Martok blinks his one good eye, perplexed by the Trill's statement.
We know that at least one Hirogen was at the very least sensitive to the empathic nature of another cold-blooded species, so it's very conceivable that this is the case and perhaps that the empathic control is cross-sensitive between more than one of the cold-bloods.

[DS9] "Soldiers of the Empire" Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
I never found it particularly convincing: after all, we've only seen the non-Changeling Martok in one story prior to this, and while he and Worf certainly got along well enough, I didn't get the feeling that there was enough justification for this deep commitment we were supposed to accept at the outset of the episode.
Martok's fear of the Jem'Hadar was quite plausible given his past history with them, but the way in which it evidenced itself worked particularly nicely.
The show was almost entirely Worf, Dax, and Martok; we saw the rest of the regulars for a scene or two at most (if generally entertaining), and Quark not at all.

As uneven as the show was in places, one scene did more to make up for it than anything else: that would be the scene where Martok's aide-de-camp Darok (Neil Vipond) meets a defeated, desolate Kor in his quarters and talks to him about the views "children" have of the past and of the future.
Worf told Martok that he gave Kor a commission, which is all well and good--but given Martok's feelings, Worf has to be an awful moron to put Kor specifically on Martok's own ship.
Given the tension of the situation as it stood, Martok's subsequent attempt to kill Kor was right on-target; something had to be done to bring the situation under control, and quickly.
