Polycarp was a companion of Papias (Irenaeus V.xxxii) another "hearer of John" as Irenaeus interprets Papias' testimony, and a correspondent of Ignatius of Antioch.
Polycarp's famous pupil was Irenaeus, for whom the memory of Polycarp was a link to the apostolic past.
Polycarp visited Rome during the time of his fellow Syrian, Pope Anicetus in the 150s or 160s, and they found their customs for observing Easter differed, Polycarp following the eastern practice of celebrating Easter on the 14th of Nisan, the day of the Jewish Passover, regardless of what day of the week it falls.

His sole surviving work, the Letter to the Philippians, and an account of The Martyrdom of Polycarp form part of the collected writings of the Ante-Nicene Fathers.
However, a post-Eusebian addition to the treatise The Martyrdom of Polycarp dates his death to Sunday, February 23 in the proconsulship of Statius Quadratus -- which works out to be 155 or 156.

He was the last to suffer and thus might be regarded as being the seal to the `witness' or `testimony' ('martyrion') of the Church.
This may have been the Jewish feast Purim, which, according to tradition, celebrates the triumph of the Jews in Persia over their enemies, as is related in the book of Esther, or else the Sabbath in the Passover week (see introduction).
No explanation is given: probably because the "Pionian" text was part of a larger "Acts of Polycarp." Either these Acts have entirely disappeared except for this letter of the church of Smyrna, or a fragment preserved in 'Codex Parisinus' may perhaps belong to them.
