Marvel was pioneering new methods of comics storytelling and characterization, addressing more serious themes, and in the process keeping and attracting readers in their teens and beyond.
The "voice" of Stan Lee is what one senses in so many of the Marvel Comics of the first half of the 1960s: his sense of humor and generally lighthearted manner, and the depiction of the Bullpen (Lee's name for the staff) as one big, happy family.

 Don Markstein's Toonopedia: Marvel Comics
Marvel Comics may have been the name of the comic (for one issue, anyway — with #2, it became Marvel Mystery Comics), but it wasn't the name of the publisher.
Marvel exploited the superhero trend to the hilt — then dropped it like a hot potato when it was no longer paying off.
Today, Marvel is still a huge comics publisher, although its biggest rival, DC Comics, has taken full advantage of its weakness to grab market share.

 IGN: Featured Filmmaker: Marvel Studios
Under Arad's leadership, Marvel Studios has been, in many ways, responsible for turning around the "Marvel curse" that plagued most of the film and TV adaptations of their characters throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
Of course, it helped immensely that Marvel stopped whoring out their best properties to the lowest bidders as they'd done throughout the 1980s (Cannon Films, anyone?) and pushed for established filmmakers that treated Marvel's source material with respect and intelligence.
All these Marvel films now in development, many of them based on second-rate characters, make one wonder whether Marvel is regressing to its 1980s whore phase or proceeding to the next stage of its cinematic evolution.
