Marvel Knights 2099 is another example of this, a series of one-shots that features some neat moments but which ultimately feature mostly unimpressive artwork and somewhat bland concepts and will probably do nothing to please fans of the original 2099 stuff or to engage the imagination of potential new fans.
Daredevil 2099 is definitely the strongest of the bunch, in both concept and execution.
Of course, Punisher 2099 really doesn't have anywhere to go, which is also kind of a neat little idea, but sadly that unusual storytelling decision of actually finishing a tale in a one-shot is the best thing that Punisher 2099 has to offer.

The 2099 series lasted for several years, until in 1996, when Marvel decided to fire then 2099 editor, Joey Cavalieri, who is thought of by many as the architect of the 2099 line.
Marvel was doing a reshuffling of its divisions and Cavalieri was one of those let go.
However, this month, the Marvel Knights imprint is launching five one-shots to celebrate their fifth (or sixth; it depends who you ask) year anniversary.

TF 2099 Foreword   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
The Marvel 2099 universe is the future of the Marvel Universe, not the Transformers/G.I. Joe Universe.
Marvel Comics realized the gold mine they now possessed, and in an effort to get their main titles (Spider-Man, X-Men, etc.) the same kind of readership, made their TF story take place in the Marvel Universe (their universe of super-hero characters), and had the characters and places of their universe appear in it.
One memorable Marvel character appearance was in Transformers #3, with Marvel's own mascot, Spider-Man. In this issue, Spidey (wearing his newly-found alien costume) helped the Autobots defeat the Decepticons, and rescue their human friend, Sparkplug Witwicky.

In a not too distant future Marvel Universe the old guard of superheroes has vanished, replaced by an authoritarian government which maintains its stranglehold through the judicious use of Sentinels.
Apparently this is being done to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the Marvel Knights imprint (even though technically this is year 6).
After all, the very concept of a one shot Marvel Knights 2099 series was doomed from the very beginning, a classic case of comic book marketing gone awry.

Of the five 2099 one-shots being released this week, this was the one I was most interested in because it's the only one that wasn't based on an already established Marvel character.
We've seen Khary Randolph's work on Marvel characters before, notably on the Mangaverse version of Spider-Man. Randolph's angular and energetic style suits the title character's powers nicely, but it's so exaggerated, the human aspect of the storytelling is lost.
Connecting the character to the Marvel Universe with an established character as a mentor was a smart move, but this vision of the classic Marvel hero is too far removed from the one most readers would recognize.

(Captain Marvel V#27)- Thanatos appeared on planet Vargas in the Tau Ceti system where the Titanian Eternal Starfox was having a rendevous with a lover.
There he used Innerspace's power to transport Captain Marvel, Spider-Man 2099, and Starfox to the Maestro's palace in an alternate reality, while he and Rick Jones encountered the aged Rick Jones of that timeline.
Thanatos' goals changed greatly from Spider-Man 2099#13 ("Devastate [the] world of 2099) to Captain Marvel V#30 ("I will be the ULTIMATE Rick Jones") I assume this is related to the fact that the ID was revealed in Captain Marvel and not a 2099 book.

The religion of Krystalin (X-Men 2099)
Given the fact that the ancient Norse/Teutonic gods were very real and present realities in the Marvel Universe, and with Thor a very public hero in contemporary Marvel comics, it made sense to extrapolate these elements into the future and imagine an organized religion built around these gods of Asgard.
X-Men 2099 was published while Asatru (a real-world religion that is a revival of ancient Teutonic paganism) was still in its infancy and had few adherents.
Krystalin's religion isn't necessarily the "Asatru of 2099," but her religion is indeed centered on the same ancient Teutonic gods that Scandanivians worshipped centuries ago and that revivalist pagans draw inspiration from today.
