Marvel vs. Capcom series - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Marvel vs. Capcom is a series of fighting games created by Capcom in which characters created by Marvel Comics and Capcom's own characters appear together.
The Marvel vs. Capcom series is perhaps considered to be the most popular among American fans of the Street Fighter series, in part because it allows their comic book heroes and villains to fight alongside or against their favorite World Warriors.
The Marvel characters depicted in these games were often based on their incarnations in various early 1990s animated series (particularly X-Men), and were often voiced by the same voice actors.

Marvel vs. Capcom series - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
The "vs. series" originates from the fact that every game in this series is a fighting game, and although it was the first vs. series involving Capcom, the name Marvel exists to distinguish it from Capcom's other vs. series with SNK (see Capcom vs. SNK) and Namco's crossover RPG with Capcom (Namco x Capcom).
The Marvel characters depicted in these games were often based on their incarnations in various early 1990s television series (particularly the X-Men animated series), and were often voiced by the same voice actors.
However, the upcoming game Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects was initially named Marvel vs. EA, spawning lots of jokes from people about various EA licenses (such as John Madden) appearing in the game.

Marvel and EA said on Thursday they had signed a deal for EA to license more than 100 of Marvel's characters, among them "Spider-Man" and the "X-Men," to create a series of fighting games pitting the Marvel heroes against new villains to be created by EA.
Marvel already has extensive licensing arrangements for some of the same characters with Activision Inc., THQ Inc. and the games unit of Vivendi Universal, raising questions about how it can license the same property again without risking legal problems or confusing consumers.
A Marvel executive said the new EA games would stand out by featuring a battling cast of superheroes, but said the details still needed to be worked out.
