Marvelman (known in American reprints as Miracleman) was a British-authored superhero comic, first published on February 3, 1954.
Marvelman's origin was based loosely on that of Captain Marvel: a young reporter named Micky Moran encounters an astrophysicist who gives him his super powers, based on atomic energy.
Marvelman and Young Marvelman each had 346 issues, being published weekly except for the last 36 issues, which were monthly, reprinting old stories.

Marvelman survived, but was forced back into his adolescent human form, and rendered amnesiac.
Ironically, considering that it was copyright problems that led to the creation of the original Marvelman, copyright infringement arguments were what caused Marvelman to be retitled Miracleman when Eclipse comics started reprinting in the States the revival strips from the British Warrior magazine in the 1980's.
Alan Moore was the writer who revived the character of Marvelman for the Warrior Magazine, but eventually pressure from Marvel Comics regarding the name of the character caused the strip to be dropped.

And if all that sounds a lot like the American comic book character Captain Marvel, there's a good reason — Marvelman was designed to be just like Captain Marvel, because his purpose was to replace that hero, both in the publisher's line-up and in the hearts of fans.
As of the January 27, 1954 issues, Marvelman and Young Marvelman replaced Cap and Junior, respectively, even to the point of continuing the numbering of the old series and transferring subscriptions to the new ones.
Marvelman was Micky Moran, a copy boy at The Daily Bugle (no relation to the paper published by Spider-Man's nemesis, J. Jonah Jameson).

 Moore's Marvel: The Miracleman Story
Marvelman was similar enough to Captain Marvel that his adventures could run in place of the Captain Marvel stories, but he was different enough from Superman to escape any copyright infringement lawsuits.
Marvelman's most engaging nemesis was Dr Emil Gargunza, a bald and bespeckled mad scientist cipher of Captain Marvel's Dr Sivana.
What's fascinating to note about Marvelman is that, when Alan Moore originally pitched to write the series, he had contingency plans in place in case WARRIOR was unable to secure the Miracleman rights.

Moore's Marvelman was a revelation, being the first real attempt to see what a superhero would actually be like in their interaction with the rest of humanity, and how their presence would affect the world around them.
Marvelman and Swamp Thing were all effectively reinvented by him, and would otherwise be completely forgotten by now, rather than being seen as iconic comic characters.

Moran was presented as having suffered amnesia in 1962, only after 19 years remembering his past as Marvelman-- yet his wife, Liz, whom he had only met after what he remembered as his last adventure as Marvelman, and had no knowledge of a Marvelman ever having existed in the 1950’s.
This presented a perplexing situation, as many of the adventures Moran remembered having as Marvelman presented situations where Marvelman were sighted by the public, drew much attention, had his exploits extensively covered in the newsmedia, and so on.
Further on in his revival, Moore established that Marvelman’s 1950’s adventures had actually never happened, explaining why his wife had never heard of Marvelman, but rather that Micky Moran was an orphan boy who had been chosen to be the subject for government experiments in creating superhumans.
