Marwan Barghouti - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Marwan Barghouti (مروان البرغوثي born June 6, 1959) is a Palestinian leader from the West Bank and a leader of the Fatah movement that forms the backbone of the Palestinian Authority and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).
Marwan Barghouti should not be confused with Mustafa Barghouti, a distant cousin.
Some say that Bargouti's arrest was illegal, pointing to both his diplomatic immunity as a member of the Palestinian Parliament, as well as the larger question of Israeli judicial authority in the Palestinian territories.

Qurei referred that Bargouti, who serves a life term in Israeli jails for claimed deadly attacks against Israel, swept to victory in the Fatah's primary elections, calling for the Israeli government which all the time talks about democracy and peace to consider this fact by releasing him.
His statements came hot on the heel of Meir Sheetrit's ones, the Israeli Minister of Transportation, who referred in an oblique reference that Bargouti should be released once an agreement of peace was signed with the Palestinians, as it is common that peace agreements are accompanied by prisoner release.
It was reported that Bargouti came to the very fore on the electoral roll after he had won the primaries by a wide margin of at least 10,000 votes.

On Friday, the NY Times featured a fawning profile of convicted murderer Marwan Bargouti, "Jailed in Israel, Palestinian Symbol Eyes Top Post".
During this uprising, which began in September 2000, Marwan Barghouti called for violence but insisted that he remained "a politician, not a military man." He said he supported attacks only against Israeli soldiers and settlers in the occupied territories, violence that he argued was condoned by international law.
Amnesty International, not an organization that is known to be particularly sympathetic to Israel, claims persuasively that even settlers - whom Amnesty says are living in their land illegally - are civilians:
