  Mary Ann (Bland) Smith
Smith was married to Mary Ann, daughter of Joshua Bland.
There are many unknowns for Mary Ann (Bland) Smith's life, and most of what is known is known because her life is presumed to have paralleled her husband's, as the family moved west to Iowa, and then migrated among the counties of southeastern Iowa before settling in Hardin County in 1851.
To imagine the life of Mary Ann Bland, I have assumed that she gave birth to a child every two years for 26 years, from the possible birth of her first child in 1841, to the birth of her possible last child in 1866, at the age of 46.

Smith's pacing and plot development are subtly perfect, and she renders just enough of Poppy's personal life to make her interestingly enigmatic.
Smith may be no Patricia Cornwell when it comes to detailing investigative work, but she knows how to tell a suspenseful story in an easy, colloquial voice women readers especially will appreciate.
Smith, "as an FBI agent, Poppy is the first of my characters who has the official capacity to treat injustice and the means to do so at her fingertips and she takes to the task with a vengeance.

 Mary-Ann Tirone Smith
Mary-Ann Tirone Smith, ’65, author of five critically acclaimed novels and a new thriller, Love Her Madly, knew she wanted to be a writer from the moment she learned to read.
Her deep interest in history, Smith says, took root at CCSU in a course taught by Dr. William O. Williams, a history professor who, according to Smith, “turned history into stories.” Mesmerized by his stories, she was swept away by the historical visions he would create during class lectures.
The students share a passion for writing, and Smith believes their work is in many ways more brilliant and passionate than the work of students she has taught at the college level.
