Raised in Pontardawe, a predominantly Welsh-speaking town to the north of Swansea, Mary Hopkin was introduced to public singing very nearly as early as she was able to talk.
McCartney invited Hopkin to London for an audition the Monday after the broadcast, and she spent the following morning in the studio recording eight different songs for the Beatle, with Peter Asher acting as engineer.
By this time Hopkin was becoming disenchanted with Apple and the public image thrust upon her, and she left the label shortly afterwards to concentrate on raising a family.

At the age of 17 Hopkin was performing in pubs and clubs in South Waless when she appeared on the TV talent show, "Opportunity Knocks." The model Twiggy was impressed by Hopkin's performance and telephoned Paul McCartney.

Mary's vocal delivery is truly amazing, especially when you consider just how young she was at the time.
Listen to it, and Mary Hopkin can have as big a role as many a bigger-named artist in convincing you that indeed those were the days.
It should have made Hopkin just as big of a star as they were, and probably could have if she hadn't become thoroughly disgusted with the music business and retired immediately after its release, at age 21.

Hopkin's first project in the 1980s was a well-reviewed stint in the Hexagon in Reading's "Rock Nativity." After this, Mike Hurst (record producer and formerly of the Springfields) asked her to sing lead in a new group he formed with Mike de Albuquerque of ELO.

Mary Hopkin and Sundance was a regretfully short-lived attempt by producer and ex-Springfields member Mike Hurst to revive the sound of the Springfields in the early 1980s -- regretfully because they had a beautifully radiant vocal sound wrapped around surprisingly modernistic (but hardly obtrusive) accompaniment that actually worked as new, contemporary recordings.
It might amaze anyone who only knows her for "Those Were the Days" to realize that of the 17 songs on this imported CD, only four appeared on either of Mary Hopkin's albums, and that only "Those Were the Days" has been available elsewhere on CD since the mid-'90s.
This collection is partly related to the similarly titled 11-song LP compilation of Hopkin's work that appeared during 1972.
