Mary Jane, unable to stomach the depth of the turmoil that her Aunt Anna was helping May deal with, was gazing out the window which happened to face the Parker home, and saw an anguished Peter Parker run into the house after the police informed him of his uncle’s death.
My guess is that Mary Jane felt safe at Anna’s because, being her father’s sister, Anna would have still loved her brother, but also been familiar with his character flaws, thus being an adequate sounding board for a troubled young girl who was trying to sort out her relationship with an estranged father.
And Mary Jane could have stayed in the role that she was originally clearly designed for, that of the seductive tart who spices things up and provides some competition for the main girl - but who then ultimately finds her way back to being either a supporting character or written out of the storyline.

Comics   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
The precise definition of comics remains a subject of debate, with some scholars insisting that their printed nature is crucial to the definition, or that they should be defined by the interdependence of image and text.
According to McCloud, "[Comics are] juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence, intended to convey information and/or to produce an aesthetic response in the viewer." By this definition, single panel illustrations (such as The Far Side, The Family Circus, or many political cartoons) are not comics, but are instead cartoons.
The term "comics" likely originated in early 20th century comic strips, which were originally a venue for serial and gag humor (i.e., the name came from comedy).

The Mary Jane from the movies is basically a combination of the personalities of the two loves from the comic book (MJ and Gwen).
I never read the comics, but I watched the animated series all the time, and Mary Jane was caring, but she got irritated at Peter a lot because of how he was always ducking out and breaking dates with her because of his duty.
Or is Mary Jane from the movies indeed kind of a combination of MJ and Gwen from the comic books.

Don Markstein's Toonopedia: Mary Jane and Sniffles
One of them was Sniffles the Mouse, whose tenure in comic books far outlasted, and is far more fondly recalled than his rather inconsequential career in animation.
That's because in comics, he was teamed with a little girl named Mary Jane, who could shrink to his size and have fantasy adventures with him in a land of living toys.
Ask the average comics and cartoon buff who Sniffles the Mouse is, and the chances are he won't even mention the dozen or so cartoons the character appeared in during the late 1930s and early '40s.

We are currently three-quarters of the way through the next story, "Mary Jane, Volume 2: Homecoming," which picks up right where "Circle of Friends" leaves off, which is good because this one ends with what is no so much a cliffhanger as a major crisis point for MJ and her friends.
