  Mary Marvel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mary Marvel is a fictional character, a superhero derived from the DC Comics (formerly Fawcett Comics) character Captain Marvel.
Just before the Marvel Family's adventures ceased publication in 1953, Mary Marvel’s costume and appearance were altered: the neckline of her blouse was lowered slightly, her hair was shortened, and she now wore yellow slippers instead of the customary Marvel Family yellow boots.
Mary complies, and is transformed by a bolt of magic lightning into a super-powered doppelganger of her deceased mother.

In the course of the interview, Mary and Billy discovered they carried matching pieces of a broken locket — which led to the revelation they were twins, separated at birth, with Mary winding up adopted by the well-to-do Bromfields and Billy fending for himself.
The story was written by Captain Marvel veteran Otto Binder, whose many contributions to comics include the female superheroes Supergirl (from DC Comics) and Miss America (Marvel).
But she stayed in Marvel Family until the end, which came in January, 1954, as a result of Fawcett getting out of the comic book business (after having had enough of the Superman copyright infringement lawsuit DC had been waging for well over a decade).

Although no distinction is made between the source of Captain Marvel's and Mary Marvel's powers in the modern SHAZAM series, in the not-so-politically-correct past, Mary received her powers from her very own "family" of goddesses.
Although she sometimes wore a Mary Marvel dress and called herself "Freckles Marvel", she never pretended to have SHAZAM powers and is not regarded as a true member of the Marvel Family.

I thought it was quite cool that she could be rendered helpless with a gag, but the character's premise made it a bit of a foregone conclusion that there was no chance that she could be successfully trussed-up while in costume (as in this retouched pic).
Mary must pit her boundless strength and invulnerability against Nightowl's awesome ability to.
Mary stumbles onto Nightowl's illicit activities while watching a jewel exhibition on live TV (not exactly sweeps-week material), which Nightowl, in true criminal mastermind fashion, decides to rob in front of a few thousand witnesses (this must be that "prowling" that he's referring to in the picture).
