Norton is the Mary Donlon Alger Professor of American History at Cornell and author of the acclaimed Founding Mothers and Fathers: Gendered Power and the Forming of American Society (1996), which was a finalist for the 1997 Pulitzer Prize.
Norton dismisses theories that hallucinogens or ergot poisoning caused the crisis.
Norton published an op-ed in The New York Times Oct. 31 that addressed the question of whether the Salem trials were a response to the trauma of war.

Mary Norton was born in 1903 and spent much of her childhood in Leighton Buzzard, at first in "The Manor House" in Lake Street (now demolished) and later at "Cedars House" in Church Square.
Mary Pearson was educated at convent schools and spent a happy year as an actress at the Old Vic before marrying Edward Norton and going to live with him in Portugal.
Mary Norton herself died in 1992 in Hartland, Devonshire and she is survived by her four children.

Science fiction and fantasy author Andre Alice Norton (February 17, 1912 – March 17, 2005) was born Alice Mary Norton in Cleveland, Ohio.
She was the first woman to receive the Gandalf Grand Master Award from the World Science Fiction Society in 1977, and she won the Damon Knight Memorial Grand Master Award from the SFWA in 1983.
In later years her health became uncertain; Norton was forced to move to Florida in November 1966 and thence to Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

Mary Norton, also the author of The Borrowers series of children's fantasy novels, was born in England in 1903, and died in 1992.
I found it interesting that for books that made my little friends take up magic as a fad, the books actually treat magic with a bit of suspicion and a message that magic is dangerous, unpredictable, and results in messes and problems.
It's not clear whether this is the intended message or whether the author simply wanted to make the stories exciting.
