Born on May 22, 1950, in Dewsbury, Yorkshire, to a family of Estonian refugees, Mary was raised in Bradford, then trained at RADA.
Mary enjoys wearing men's clothing to illustrate that she doesn't believe that a woman needs to wear a short skirt or a low cut top to be sexy.
Mary's always been interested in outer space because, she says, "I'd hate to think the only important things are those you can see and touch."

Mary Tamm (Romana I) Lalla Ward (Romana II)
When Tamm chose not to sign on for a second season, despite optimistic prodding on the part of the show’s producers, the part was recast.
Although Tamm had left the show on relatively good terms, by the start of Season 17, she was very visibly pregnant, making her return even for a regeneration scene impractical.

Mary Tamm, the first incarnation of the time-lady known as Romana for short, beckoned to our chums.
Tamm first, and dutifully got all his "Key to Time" videos signed, as well as "Companions", "The Seventies" and one of Chalky’s covers.
Tamm, for Shirt to take a photo, he managed to carry all his items to the door, without dropping them.

The first incarnation of Romana is markedly different to most of the companions that went before in that she is intellectually on a par with the Doctor.
It has been argued that Mary Tamm doesn`t bring a great deal to the role, but she seems to have made a living out of playing the more "grander" characters so it seems hard to imagine anyone else in the role.
Tamm's rapport with Baker is now nothing less then exceptional and the character itself is totally comfortable with the miscreant time lord.

 Outpost Gallifrey: Reviews
First of all though folks is the Mary Tamm feature — this is a very fun interview production really and it’s evident that the team had a wonderful time making it.
Mary gives quite a relaxed interview really and goes into some considerable detail about her background and early career, particularly refreshing as these are stories which are not sown into fandom’s conscience because they are little told stories.
Each interview carries with it a new introduction from Nick Briggs and Keith Barnfather who fail miserably at remembering anything accurately about the Mary Tamm interview which makes for a hilarious little intro to the piece.

Fresh from the academy, she was characterized as someone with a lot of book smarts, but none of the practical experience that characterized the Doctor's approach to problem solving.
Actress Mary Tamm played Romana, but left the show after just one season (and, due to her very visible pregnancy at the time the next season started, she could not even appear briefly for a regeneration sequence!).
I can say that the ones which include Tom "The Doctor" Baker and/or Mary "Romana" Tamm seem to be the most enjoyable, as these two are full of humor and fun remembrances of their times in front of the camera.

A Special Message From Mary Tamm   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Mary Tamm is, of course, best known to Doctor Who fans for her origination of the role of Romana, or to be more precise, Lady Romanadvoratalundar, whom she impeccably played throughout the six adventures of the epic Key To Time story-cycle that comprised the programme's 16th season.
Following her professional training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts she enjoyed a stint with the Birmingham Repertory Company, and later came to grace London stages in such productions as Mother Earth, I'll Be Back Before Midnight, Abigail's Party, Dead Funny, The Lover, and The Rise And Fall Of Little Voice.
This is not only Mary's first cruise, but also her first USA fandom appearance on the West Coast, and she plans to follow it up with her first ever live Public Television pledge night.

He's Peter Miller, a young freelance Hamburg reporter whose quietly successful existence with his live-in girlfriend Sigi (British actress Mary Tamm) is shattered when a random event brings him into contact with the Odessa.
Both Voight and Tamm were coached by dialogue director Osman Ragheb, and manage decent light German accents.
The Odessa File is a pretty faithful adaptation of the book, and while it stretches logic a little when the very youthful-looking Miller attempts to infiltrate a gathering of SS veterans and the musical score in particular is very 70-ish, it still works in many parts, and works very well in a few standout scenes.

There's some good performances and clever humor at work here; the rapport between Tom Baker and Mary Tamm is quite good and stands out amongst all of the Doctor's companions over the years (although she would later be replaced with a different actress).
Actors Tom Baker and Mary Tamm (the Doctor and Romana, respectively) appear on 2 discs together, reuniting after almost 24 years to share some memories and laughs about their work on the show.
Other voices, like producers, directors, and other actors, appear in the mix on various discs as well, but the charm of having the Doctor and a companion brought back together in this manner is quite exciting.

If you fancied seeing this film for the action or the gladiator scenes, well these are woefully poor and inferior in direction and realisim to an episode of Xena or even the A-Team !
Overall the acting and characterisation is pretty weak throughout (with the exception of a surprise appearance from British actress Mary Tamm who was the beauteous Romana in Doctor Who, back in the 70's).
Sadly even the voluptuous warrior-maidens are in short supply in this movie so don't expect much excitement there either.
